Man Has Lots of Competition in Warming the Globe
Admin, Sunday 16 December 2007 - 20:55:48 // comment: 12 //     printer friendly   //     Font Size - Increase / Decrease / Reset

No fewer than three new scientific findings in the past couple of days show how scientists have a lot to learn about climate and climate change. None of these findings are accurately accounted for in computer models and it is becoming increasinly clear that it may not be the models to blame but a classic case of 'garbage in, garbage out'.No Longer Supported
1) “Extra Sunshine Blamed for Part of Arctic Meltdown” -
“A reduction in clouds was likely a culprit in this summer’s record Arctic meltdown which temporarily opened up the fabled Northwest Passage, scientists announced this week. -- NASA's CloudSat Project
Wow, that's strange I thought the Arctic was “Screaming” from it's fever?
This week, after reviewing his own new data, NASA climate scientist Jay Zwally said: “At this rate, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions.”- “Ominous Arctic Melt Worries Experts”
NASA scientist James Hansen even said that the earth had hit one of his so-called tipping points. “We have passed that and some other tipping points in the way that I will define them”. Now it turns out all this arctic melting was due to clear skies and lower pollution! But again they shout from the tallest peaks “trust our models”.

2) "Magma May Be Melting Greenland Ice" -
“clues to a new natural contribution to the melt arose when scientists discovered a thin spot in the Earth’s crust under the northeast corner of the Greenland Ice Sheet where heat from Earth’s insides could seep through, scientists will report here this week at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union.
“to effectively separate and quantify human impacts on climate change, we must understand the natural impacts too.”
“Where the crust is thicker, things are cooler, and where it’s thinner, things are warmer,” von Frese explained
“What caused the hotspot to suddenly form is another mystery. “It could be that there’s a volcano down there,” he said, “but we think it’s probably just the way the heat is being distributed by the rock topography at the base of the ice.”
Isn't it clear they really don't know why the ice is melting. They aren't even sure the melting is all that unusual since although it is melting at the edges it is gaining ice in the interior. The magma research was funded by the National Science Foundation and you can read more at Ohio State University's ReseachNews site.
“A continuous data set of Greenland Ice Sheet altimeter height from ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellites, 1992 to 2003, has been analyzed. An increase of 6.4 ± 0.2 centimeters per year is found in the vast interior areas above 1500 meters” -- “Recent Ice-Sheet Growth in the Interior of Greenland”
Even the scientists are saying that in order to tell if man is contributing to warming we have to understand the natural impacts first. It is quite obvious we aren't even close to understanding nature's natural climate cycles or nature's other routine contributions. Our computer models are suffering from the classic "garbage in, garbage out" prediction syndrome.

3) "Scientists Clueless over Sun's Effect on Earth" -
“A confusing array of new and recent studies reveals that scientists know very little about how much sunlight is absorbed by Earth versus how much the planet reflects, how all this alters temperatures, and why any of it changes from one decade to the next.”
“Reports in the late 1980s found the amount of sunlight reaching the planet's surface had declined by 4 to 6 percent since 1960. Suddenly, around 1990, that appears to have reversed.”
It would seem that as cut our air pollution we're causing global warming and the arctic ice to melt. See this 2005 BBC article "The amount of sunlight reaching the Earth's surface is increasing, two new studies in Science magazine suggest."
“Thing is, nobody knows what caused the apparent shift. Could be changes in cloud cover, they say, or maybe reduced effects of volcanic activity, or a reduction in pollutants.”
“A third study in the journal this week, tackling a related aspect of all this, finds that Earth has reflected more sunlight back into space from 2000 to 2004 than in years prior. However, a similar investigation last year found just the opposite. A lack of data suggests it's impossible to know which study is right.”
“The bottom line, according to a group of experts not involved in any of these studies: Scientists don't know much about how sunlight interacts with our planet, and until they understand it, they can't accurately predict any possible effects of human activity on climate change.”
So there you have it. Given the current knowledge about how our planet functions scientists can not “predict any possible effects of human activity on climate change”. So can someone tell me why we're proposing to spend trillions on CO2 reduction? Especially when even the left now agrees that CO2 does not cause the earth to start warming -
“At least three careful ice core studies have shown that CO2 starts to rise about 800 years (600-1000 years) after Antarctic temperature during glacial terminations.” -- RealClimate.org (“Climate science by climate scientists”).
Part of a very specious argument that in short agrees that CO2 didn't cause historic warming periods (like the one we may be experiencing now) but after 800 years or so of warming CO2 levels increased and took over from what ever started it (they don't really know what started the warming, but they seem sure that CO2 finished it). Sorry, this explanation doesn't pass the smell test.

As we've said before science has a lot to offer in making the lives of man better. Lets not start using science to drag man back in to the dark ages before electricity and motor vehicles. Even if global warming (or the PC variation "climate change") is real the poor of the world are going to suffer far more from it's effects if they're sitting in dark homes with no air conditioning and no automobile to take them to the hospital when needed.

Let us be sure of our data before we start taking drastic measures. Apparently we've come to a point in scientific discovery that we can make absolute judgements on less than 1% accurate information.
