However, to truly capture the relationship between solar cycles and mean global temperature, one needs to appreciate the growing body of data at NASA correlating solar energy output with solar sunspot numbers. Much has been learned in the last 3 years -- and none of it is good for AGW Warmists. Assuming the observed correlation holds over time, we now have an excellent proxy for TSI based on sunspot numbers dating back to 1750 (23 solar cycles & counting). I've taken the sunspot database and summed the numbers to derive an integration representing the "total energy" for each solar cycle since 1750. The result clearly shows a trend toward stronger and stronger solar energy output (2.6% average increase per cycle) from 1750 to 2009. Since we have no accurate TSI data prior to solar cycle 22, more remains to be studied. However, the early results show "global warming", if there indeed has been any at all, is due to increased solar radiation... just what every weather forecaster who has lived through enough of life to have seen both cooling and warming can tell you. It's also what the vast majority of astrophysicists believe, despite what ignorant professors of "science history" like Naomi Oreskes have tried to assert. Oreskes is a liar of the first order, and deserves to lose her tenure for committing intellectual fraud with her "98%" of all scientists "believe" statistic. Nonsense. Out of the scientists I've met and worked with over the years, only a handful still believe the AGW nonsense.

The truth is, Matt, that not one public finger needs to be lifted to change from a fossil fuel driven industry to other forms of power generation. As fossil fuels become more difficult to retrieve, private industry will either develop more effective & efficient means to extract them, or it will discover more effective & efficient alternatives. Competition will help select the best path forward -- no need to spend our society back into the Stone Age to achieve the goal of "clean" energy. Like Thomas Robert Malthus and Paul David Ehrlich before you, Matt, the "scare tactic" of rising global population won't hold water here. Malthus thought 1 Billion would be completely unsustainable and result in massive famine & death. Nearly 200 years later, and as recently as 1994, Ehrlich & Gretchen C. Daily at Stanford University thought 5.5 Billion was not sustainable, based on a perception of declining fossil fuels supply. They are ignorant academics who stroke each other's egos, while telling others to "get their heads out of the sand". They, like you Matt, ought to spend more time looking for ways to increase our productivity & efficiency to make room for (and sustain) even more people. The culture of death comes from an ignorance in regards to vast resources that remain to be tapped, and the vast wealth that remains to be created -- if only everyone would get to work and help make it happen! Academics, by their nature, are lazy people. They use their personal intellect to avoid work. Matt, the truth is that the Sun governs mean global temperature -- not CO2, not mankind. The Sun put out more energy toward the middle & end of the 20th Century, which might have been observed by a minuscule (+0.5C) increase in mean global temperature. I say might have, because the data is not compelling -- one must look at the output from flawed computer models of climate in order to establish any correlation between rising CO2 & mean global temperature. And correlation does not mean causality. CO2 rises during warming of the ocean surface due to extra solar radiation. This is not controversial; it is clearly observed in the seasonal variation in Scripps Observatory records on the side of the volcano Mauna Loa in Hawaii...the only site in the world with continuous CO2 records dating back prior to 1960. Your reliance upon "scientific organizations" all jumping on the CO2 bandwagon doesn't change the science. CO2 cannot drive climate any more than a fly can decelerate an automobile driving down the highway by landing on its windshield. Get off your high horse, Matt, and do a little bit more research. You'll find you've been lied to by the Naomi Oreskes of this society, and there is no "consensus" among scientists in regards to AGW. What there IS is a consensus among political activists, journalists, and computer modelers who are ignorant about the real astrophysics and the full role the Sun plays in climate change.
