Solar Activity, the cause of all global warming.

The graph above shows the global temperature anomaly since 1979 (blue) and CO2 levels (fuchsia). There is no correlation between CO2 levels and temperatures. There are very strong historic correlations between solar activity and temperatures. Right now our sun is experiencing very mild solar activity, so expect cooler temperatures! The sun image shows current sun spot activity, it is a near real time NASA image (SOHO MDI Latest Image). Click here for an enlarged view from NASA.GOV.

Quote to Consider
"The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific technological elite."

You don't suppose Washington's weather has anything to do with geography and the trade winds, right?

ron
09 Feb : 05:19

Seattle, I did it for you. The high temp yesterday, 2-8-10, was officially 43 F. As opposed to your stated 105 F. So, why did you lie? In fact, the extended forecast is for 40s and 50s.

ron
09 Feb : 05:11
Seattle, why don't you link in a weather report that showed that it was 105 F? That would be real world data. Not of the power of CO2 but real data, nevertheless.

ron
09 Feb : 05:02
A Fact, I've tried to discuss with you, as well. Just remember it is you that is terminating the discussion. By the way, I think it's great to put solar on your getaway property. Solar in limited uses will be great. And you must be well off enough to like socialism. I have just the one house that I own and I have to scrape pennies to pay the taxes.

Seattle Q,
Meanwhile Washington is about to experience the most snowfall since 1898. The southeast is getting the heaviest snows in the last 15 years.

You walk around in a t-shirt when it's 52 outside. Okay, you must be a moron who doesn't know how to dress themself.

Yes, man made global warming is a hoax. CO2 doesn't have any actual science behind it. Michael Mann is a moron who doesn't understand that tree rings indicate moisture level not temperature.

seattle question
08 Feb : 23:59
the seattle area just had the warmest january is recorded history. i haven't seen a single snow flake all year and yesterday i was walking around outside in a t-shirt. also last year we had one of the hottest summers in recent history here. in a place where 90 is considered too hot to do anything, it was 105. can any of you inbred, right wing, tea baggers tell me global warming isn't real now?

SFM
08 Feb : 22:34
Gee Finch I would like to reply to your post with a sarcastic diatribe but I cant figure out what the {censored} you are talking about. I would write to you but I dont know the address of the institution in which you are being held. Why dont you post your plan here for all to see or do you just like getting mail?

Bull [censored] we are half way into ICE AGE if we were not planting so much foliage we would be full blown into Ice Age what we should be worried about is Using up what is known to push us full blown into it the Methane Hydrate under the Crust Write to me i have a plan to supply fuel for aproximately 2000 years just on a 5% usage we can overt a catastrophy

08 Feb : 18:36

And by the way, I don't consider soft core porn author and Chairman of the IPCC, R.K. Pachauri, to be a scientist either. He is, at most, a minor league political hack.

congahands
08 Feb : 16:30
Anonymous, I don't believe that scientists are the enemy. But that means that I don't consider Michael Mann worthy of the term scientist. The East Anglia staff are in the same boat. Their e-mail admissions of their behavior disqualify them from that title no matter how many degrees they have earned.

Denny
08 Feb : 14:58
Anonymous, did you see my link??? Oh yes, decades of Bogus research that uses "scare tactic's...Now that's real Science..I think you should read this instead...but of course you probably won't.....

That is if you really care about the ClimateGate scenerio....

Denny
08 Feb : 14:50
Anonymous, blogs ARE a source of communication for article's "containing" Science information! You know that! It's just one of the Alarmist's excuse to cut this site down...Typical Alarmist!!!

How about getting to your fiasco that you believe in....Where's the Empirical Evidence that CO2 is casuing AGW??? This is the "point" to this matter...We know here that Temperature has gone up SLOWLY....That's not our issue...Our issue is what we here are complaining about....

Denny
08 Feb : 14:47
Anonymous, that depends on your stance! And NO we don't depend on Blogs but we do have these.......

Anonymous
08 Feb : 14:41
so, you guys continue to rely on blogs and political commentaries as the basis for your science.

when will you actually look at the decades of scientific research.

or are scientists still the enemy when discussing matters of science?

Denny
08 Feb : 14:14
I recommend going there and posting your comments on that site in the below article! Let them know how you feel!!! I just did!

Denny
08 Feb : 14:07
Gee, Obama starting up a "new" agency dedicated to addressing the impending doom of Global Warming....Where in the H@#* did he find monies for that!!!

stop smoking pot
08 Feb : 12:35
a fact said,
"I have chosen to stay in the city so that my acreage is that much more enjoyable."

So the less you're on your land the more you enjoy it??

Do the squirrels have the ability to form the concept of
enjoyable? The only way I could enjoy 100 acres would be to live on it and, I'll use
the evil word exploit, but if you hunt and feed the animal population you are in fact exploiting it's resources.

SFM
08 Feb : 12:02
To A Fact. I am also a hunter. It just seems that your definition of "managing" is to kill a few deer and squirrels. I just wonder how your 100 acres was able to survive for the millions of years before you bought it. I mean without those birdfeeders and whatever other food you provide for animals how could they have possibly have survived all this time. If you truly want it to remain wilderness, you dont introduce artificial food supplies, cabins, and solar panels. Look if you like killing animals and eating them, fine. But dont try to feed us some holier than thou, "I am the Lord of the wilderness" BS. Can you tell me EXACTLY how many deer and squirrels live on your 100 acres. If you cant , how do you know how many to kill, you know just to help them out. Looks like you apply the same theories to AGW as you do "wilderness"

Denny
08 Feb : 08:50
A fact...I thought you weren't coming back! Anyway, I'm happy to see that there is SOMETHING in common...Rural living is the ONLY way to live IMO...Wouldn't trade it for, well maybe one place..

This is what makes America great, at least for the moment, to have opinions, beliefs and being able to debate the Issues...Common Sense is of what value to People??? I often wonder of this statement...For me to see AGW, it's kind of obvious to me...But I have taken "a lot" of time to study this issue on both sides! Of course if you have a Scientific Interest it does help to see thru the retoric...Not saying you don't have it, A fact but it's obvious you don't know your Science...But that's OK also....we all have our weaknesses...as I do also....

Denny
08 Feb : 08:43
Well, a pretty good Super Bowl last night...You could tell that the Saints wanted it MORE than the Colts! They do have a good team...The player in that controversal call with the 2 point conversion was from Toledo Ohio...Happy to see another team make the Super Bowl list! This was the "best" scenario's from the regional to the Super Bowl I've seen in my time...All tight scored games! That's the way it should be....

A fact
08 Feb : 08:38
Denny I manage 100 acres of my own property.Yes i do hunt on the landI believe gun control is hitting what you aim at) I eat what I harvest and I believe in keeping my deer and squirrel populations to a level the environment can sustain them.I feed birds and the other wildlife on my property. In my life this place will continue to stay stay as it is wilderness.I have chosen to stay in the city so that my acreage is that much more enjoyable.I do have a small cabin on my property that I can stay in.I hope to put solar panels up this spring because I have no electric ran to my cabin.I also plant a new fruit tree every year, they usually end up with a blite but I will keep trying.Yes Denny I too am an American who just happens to not agree with you on certain issues.Ron I did not respond to you because you will believe what you believe and I will believe what I believe,I can see no more reason in discussing this matter with you.

The episode also pointed out what happens when you appeal directly to emotion, such as sadness or fear. It also shows me that many people, in spite of their advanced education, do not have even a high schooler's understanding of science. And what is scary is that these people are old enough to vote on matters of science and the environmnent.

ron
07 Feb : 18:17
The h2o bit came from an episode of "Bull*&%$" by Penn and Teller. They went to a "green" fair and had people sign a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide. Every single person signed without questioning or blinking. It made the people "feel good" to do something about the environment. And these weren't "slovenly" construction workers, like myself. These were college-educated people, mostly, and every one thought they were up to speed on environmental "issues."

Are Sea Level Increases Due To Global Warming? Be Careful How You Answer That.

One of the scare tactics used in the Global Warming debate is that sea levels are rising due to human CO2 releases. The problem with this assertion is the science just doesn't back it up.

What is the cause of sea level increases? Thermal expansion is the primary reason. The following is a quote from the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

“What causes sea level to change? Firstly, as ocean water warms, it expands. On the basis of observations of ocean temperatures and model results, thermal expansion is believed to be one of the major contributors to historical sea level changes. Further, thermal expansion is expected to contribute the largest component to sea level rise over the next hundred years.”
But if the IPCC agrees that thermal expansion is the primary reason for the sea level increases, and they propose that man-made CO2 level increases is the cause of global warming, what caused the very steady sea level increases prior to high CO2 levels? Because if you pay attention to the science that the IPCC conveniently leaves out of their reports there are jewels to be found. Take a look at the following graph:

Holocene Sea Levels (Wikipedia Image)

The graph above shows sea levels for the past 8,000 years. Can you identify the period with the least amount of change? Recent times have been very steady. The astute observer might point out that the degree of accuracy with this chart might easily hide recent changes. So take a look at the following graph:

Recent Sea Level Increases (Wikipedia Image)

Tide records show a rate of increase at 180 mm/century going back to the 19th century and show no measurable acceleration throughout the late 19th and first half of the 20th century. Further the IPCC 2001 report states "No significant acceleration in the rate of sea level rise during the 20th century has been detected". However, CO2 level rates have increased significantly in the later half of the 20th century. The following IPCC graph shows the CO2 rate of increase was much higher in the later half of the 20th century than the first half.

IPCC CO2 Levels, Past 1000 Years

If CO2 levels were to blame for increases in sea level one would expect to have seen similar rates of increase. So what is causing increases in sea level? If global warming causes thermal expansion, and thermal expansion is the "primary reason for the sea level increases" (IPCC quote), and the rate of sea level rise hasn't changed significantly in centuries it is obvious the increases are not caused by anything man is doing. So one must conclude that any increase in sea level to date is natural and most likely will continue to be natural unless the rate of sea level rise increases dramatically and better tracks something that man is doing.

One would also have to conclude that the rate of warming increase has also been the same for the past few centuries. The rate of sea level increase in this case acting as a temperature proxy (much like tree rings and ice cores). Keep in mind that relatively accurate sea level measurements have been around a lot longer than accurate global temperature measurements.

It is always fun to have the other side in a debate make your points for you.

I really believe that global warming isn't doing that to our oceans and our sea levels, after reading this information for my 8th grade school project, i found it very helpful. I don't believe sea levels were incresing becasue of global warming. Thank tou.

So if "global warming causes thermal expansion, and thermal expansion is the 'primary reason for the sea level increases'" then global warming would be the primary reason for the rise in sea level. Although 7.87 inches doesn't seem like a lot, 7.87 inches of water over all the seas in the entire world is huge. I think this article presents the right facts, but it has too many flaws.

I think the point is what caused the thermal expansion before 1940 or so? CO2 levels couldn't have caused it. Yet the sea level has been increasing at about the same pace for hundreds of years. If the rate of increase is the same today as it was 200 years ago the cause is very likely the same as well. Therefore CO2 isn't causing our warming.

The problem with that philosophy is that people will think "So if CO2 isn't the cause of global warming, well that means we can safely increase our gas emissions as much as we want"

Whether CO2 emissions are responsible for global warming is indeed up to debate. One thing is sure though: excess of CO2 emissions CAN'T be a good thing. Just because there are no clearly identifiable immediate consequences doesn't mean we shouldn't be careful. All this data proves one thing: we are still ignorant to the way our planet works. And I don't think all this "hey this shows that human activities may not be responsible, we can safely ignore those alarmist hippies and does whatever the f**k we want" reaction is either safe or clever.

CO2 levels have been MUCH higher in the past than what they are today and life FLOURISHED, so 'yes' higher CO2 levels can be a good thing. People try to say that corals will all die under high CO2 levels yet they too flourished during previous periods where CO2 levels were 10-15 times higher than what they are today. Are some types of corals sensitive to CO2? Possibly. But who cares other species will take their place, that is how nature works. Nature is constantly adjusting to the changing conditions of the planet. Think about how much change a large meteor striking the earth would cause, yet the earth adjusted just fine. Or the every 10,000 year ice age! I think man can do without a couple of types of coral in order to live like civilized humans, instead of like foraging Neanderthals.

First of all, that's false- CO2 levels are at an unprecedented high, up around 380 ppm. Before the industrial revolution, they never got much higher than 300 ppm. It is absurd to be unconcerned about species loss so we can "live like civilized humans". At our current rate of species loss, we are in the middle of a sixth mass extinction. Life on earth will most certainly bounce back, but that doesn't mean this isn't a huge issue. Biodiversity is crucial to a healthy planet.

The level of carbon dioxide in our air is higher than it has been in the last 600,000 years. Yeah, there certainly were times when we had higher levels but also the climate was totally different. There were no ice caps so the sea levels were many feet above where they are now, putting our current coastal cities underwater. Global temperatures were on average 70F everywhere and everything was a swamp. The earth will definitely survive high levels of CO2 but we probably won't. A recent article in Science, the most prestigious science journal around (vol 318 page 1230-1231) outlines how screwed we are. Google a video by Nate Lewis from Caltech as well.
It is predicted that in the next 50 years we will have an increase in temperatures of at least 2.5C which is enough to wipe out huge percentages of animals around. Keep in mind that the heat wave that killed a significant portion of europe a few years ago was only 0.5C higher than normal.

Please, over 10,000 people died in France alone during that heat wave because the doctors and ambulance drivers were on vacation and people have gotten soft. The actual temperatures were not at all unprecedented and occur in similarly large cities all over the globe. Dallas Texas sees those temperatures in March! So it wasn't so much the temperatures that were to blame as much as was the the bureaucracy of socialized medicine and the fact that people had become so reliant on it (rather than on themselves).

Cann someone please explain the second graph, the text on the right side says sea level change, wich would imply annual change, if this is true the seas are rising in a increasing rate

There is an annual increase, but it's not an increasing rate, it's a steady rate.

First, look at the first graph. It shows that the sea level has been rising for at least the last 8 thousand years (though more slowly in the last 2000 years than previously). So we know that sea levels have a trend of rising. Next, the second graph takes a closer look at a more recent snapshot (last ~130 years). You'll see that the sea level was rising (which makes sense from the trend) consistently from the beginning (1880). But is the RATE of the rise increasing? That is, is it rising FASTER now than it was previously?

You'll note that you can draw a straight line from about 1890 to present. This ability to draw a straight line through basically the entire graph means that the average rate of increase is basically constant (obviously barring yearly fluctuations). And you can almost see a ~5cm rise every ~20 years. That's consistent, steady rise.

Rising at an increasing rate would mean that while it may have risen ~5cm in ~20 years at the beginning, it rose ~10cm in ~20 years after that, then ~15cm in ~20 years after that, etc. That is an increasing rate.

You can also look at the last graph of CO2 and see what a graph of growth at an increasing rate looks like. See how you can't draw a straight line from 1800 - 2000? That's because it's not a steady, constant rate of growth, but an increasing rate.

That's also part of the conclusions drawn. If CO2 was the culprit causing the rise in sea levels, then the increasing rate of growth we see in CO2 levels graph should be reflected by a similarly increasing rate of rise in sea levels. Since there is no such correlation, then we can conclude that CO2 is likely NOT the primary driving force of sea level rise.

Hope that helped. (And I'm not a climate scientist, nor mathematician so I hope I didn't step all over the terminology)

WOW Ignorance really is bliss huh?

First, i really have a hard time understanding why people believe scientists around the world would waste there time or risk there careers studying something that wasnt real. do you think us scientists make things up just for fun. Sorry most scientists went into science for the betterment of mankind. That is our driving force. whats yours money? EXACTLY!

Lastly want to know why the sea levels havnt risen as dramatically as the CO2 levels? its beacuse the ice melting first is sea ice which would not raise sea levels. However just wait for the day when greenlands lad ice and antarcticas land ice begin to melt then you will all change your tunes. Of course youll turn to us scientists crying what can we do and well tell you told you so.

I couldn't agree you with you more. I'm a chemistry phd student at Harvard and after talking with many climatologists, one of whom discovered the ozone hole in the antarctic and there are not legit scientists who dispute this fact. It is only agencies like this site and the media that cloud public perception and twist scientific fact for political gain. Don't buy it.

There is a lag in time between CO2 level rise and warming/sea level rise. They don't happen simultaneously. That is why the 19th century graph is used in this example on this website. The warming will eventually catch up with the CO2 levels and then the sea level increase will accellerate.

i believe its been rising, falling, and the earth warming and cooling for millenia's, hundreds and thousands of years. its completely natural. yeah maybe we dont help but i agree with the guy above, there was a time when a storm was a storm and a earth quake a quake - not some evil deposited by man through industry.

i dont believe we effect it as much as 'science' leads us to believe. you cannot actually prove that we are we are actually contributing to global warming at all, your just speculating and throwing stats around. funny how climate change is on the tip of every politicians tongue and it lies side by side with taxation. in the near future we will be taxed on our carbon emissions carbon footprints, thats what this climate change propaganda is really all about isnt it?

this earth could recover and survive anything - us humans on the other cannot and our days are numbered - which is actually fair game cos everything has its tima and place, and if we get wiped out then so be it.

ya its true co2 levels have risen and fallen over time even before man existed. and even people who point that out know that that co2 caused warming of the earth ion the past. also no one can dispute the fact that co2 levels are higher now than anytime in the history of life on earth. hmmmm i think its gonna get hot duh.

I agree i hold a phd in biochem and no self respecting scientist would argue against global warming. All legit scientists beleive and know it is happening. the only ones who claim otherwise are those in the oil and energy industries, and there paid to say that. in the scientific community we call that a conflict of interest.

I remember in the late 70's when we were all told the earth was entering a mini ice age. I believe it was by these same reputable scientists. I think our ability to measure things has increased without the ability to correctly intrepret those measurements. Climate is a very long term proposition and to assume that the last 30 years is representitive of the next 30 years is a bit dangerous. While there is ample evidence of a rise in CO2 there just isn't enough evidence that it is causing a rise in temps/sea levels etc... to cause a reasonable person to much alarm. The only sure thing I see in the whole history of the earth is that everything changes. To think that we can stop that just because we can now measure certain parts is rather foolish on our part. For all we know we might actually be measuring the wrong thing. A prudent person would do well to be environmetally consious without go so far overboard as to cause sever damage in another area. It wouldn't hurt anyone to drive a high milage car instead of a gas guzzler. On the other hand it wouldn't make sense to to totally stop using fossile fuels. A little patience and a lot more knowledge will give a clearer indication of what we need to do.

Yea, who cares what they say? They are only people who have undergone many years of intense schooling to understand their field in depth, many times from the molecular level up. What would a chemist or physicist know about particle and light reactions in our atmosphere?

As a geologist at an energy company I obviously have a vested interest in the issue. Some may call it a conflict of interest. However in this global warming debate I would like to put a few points out there:
-there have never been more humans living on the plant as there are currently. Obviously, the current condition is not unhealthy.
-since there are more humans on the planet, will this not cause it own set of sustainability issues? The issue may not be too much CO2 but too much homo sapien.
-how accurate are temperature readings? Have not cities increased in size dramatically over the past 40 years? A weather station that was in the rural part of a city in the 1950's is now part of suburbia. The heat island effect (warming due to increased population density) would make the temperature at that once rural weather station produce current readings impacted by the heat island effect, not global warming.
-global warming is better than global cooling and you always get one or the other. You rarely get global temperature stability.
-Would the effects of economic upheaval caused by cap and trade be more dramatic than those of climate change?
-Humans are terrestrial vertebrates. Terrestrial vertebrates do very poorly during ANY dramatic terrestrial disturbance, natural or manmade. Our years are limited.
-Has anyone performed a water balance on the ice sheets to determine if there is a correlation between the polar ice loss and sea level rise?
-Just because two parameters show correlation does not mean that one of the parameters is causal.

JUST WONDERING, NOT PREACHING.

How much does erosion effect the water levels, think Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls. Or when it rains the creeks streams and rivers run brown for days. Under water volcano's can create huge mountains also raising levels and warming the water which causes melting of ice. The ice that is in the water has no effect on levels only that which is on land. So my question is what is the comparetive effect of the ice melted that is on land for the ice in the water has no effect on levels and considering that the ocean's cover three quarters of the earths surface I would think it is not that great. maybe all the ice that has melted would not fill the grand canyon. These are just a some questions I would like ansered before I belivevd in global warming

Concider this: If you take an object with a certain mass and put it in vacuum, then it's temperature is decided from how much energy it receives and how much i radiates. OK?

Lets say that how much it receives is constant, but that's it suddenly radiates less. How much higher temperature it will have is then decided by the new absorption.

How long will it take for the temperature change to be finished? Well it depends on it's mass. A small object will have 90% of its new temperature very quickly, but a larger object will take longer time.

Lets say we make a change to the earths absorption that would in the end make up for a temperature change of 100 degrees. How long would it take for the globe to take 90% of that temperature?
