Solar Activity, the cause of all global warming.

The graph above shows the global temperature anomaly since 1979 (blue) and CO2 levels (fuchsia). There is no correlation between CO2 levels and temperatures. There are very strong historic correlations between solar activity and temperatures. Right now our sun is experiencing very mild solar activity, so expect cooler temperatures! The sun image shows current sun spot activity, it is a near real time NASA image (SOHO MDI Latest Image). Click here for an enlarged view from NASA.GOV.

Quote to Consider
"The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific technological elite."

08 Feb : 18:36

And by the way, I don't consider soft core porn author and Chairman of the IPCC, R.K. Pachauri, to be a scientist either. He is, at most, a minor league political hack.

congahands
08 Feb : 16:30
Anonymous, I don't believe that scientists are the enemy. But that means that I don't consider Michael Mann worthy of the term scientist. The East Anglia staff are in the same boat. Their e-mail admissions of their behavior disqualify them from that title no matter how many degrees they have earned.

Denny
08 Feb : 14:58
Anonymous, did you see my link??? Oh yes, decades of Bogus research that uses "scare tactic's...Now that's real Science..I think you should read this instead...but of course you probably won't.....

That is if you really care about the ClimateGate scenerio....

Denny
08 Feb : 14:50
Anonymous, blogs ARE a source of communication for article's "containing" Science information! You know that! It's just one of the Alarmist's excuse to cut this site down...Typical Alarmist!!!

How about getting to your fiasco that you believe in....Where's the Empirical Evidence that CO2 is casuing AGW??? This is the "point" to this matter...We know here that Temperature has gone up SLOWLY....That's not our issue...Our issue is what we here are complaining about....

Denny
08 Feb : 14:47
Anonymous, that depends on your stance! And NO we don't depend on Blogs but we do have these.......

Anonymous
08 Feb : 14:41
so, you guys continue to rely on blogs and political commentaries as the basis for your science.

when will you actually look at the decades of scientific research.

or are scientists still the enemy when discussing matters of science?

Denny
08 Feb : 14:14
I recommend going there and posting your comments on that site in the below article! Let them know how you feel!!! I just did!

Denny
08 Feb : 14:07
Gee, Obama starting up a "new" agency dedicated to addressing the impending doom of Global Warming....Where in the H@#* did he find monies for that!!!

stop smoking pot
08 Feb : 12:35
a fact said,
"I have chosen to stay in the city so that my acreage is that much more enjoyable."

So the less you're on your land the more you enjoy it??

Do the squirrels have the ability to form the concept of
enjoyable? The only way I could enjoy 100 acres would be to live on it and, I'll use
the evil word exploit, but if you hunt and feed the animal population you are in fact exploiting it's resources.

SFM
08 Feb : 12:02
To A Fact. I am also a hunter. It just seems that your definition of "managing" is to kill a few deer and squirrels. I just wonder how your 100 acres was able to survive for the millions of years before you bought it. I mean without those birdfeeders and whatever other food you provide for animals how could they have possibly have survived all this time. If you truly want it to remain wilderness, you dont introduce artificial food supplies, cabins, and solar panels. Look if you like killing animals and eating them, fine. But dont try to feed us some holier than thou, "I am the Lord of the wilderness" BS. Can you tell me EXACTLY how many deer and squirrels live on your 100 acres. If you cant , how do you know how many to kill, you know just to help them out. Looks like you apply the same theories to AGW as you do "wilderness"

Denny
08 Feb : 08:50
A fact...I thought you weren't coming back! Anyway, I'm happy to see that there is SOMETHING in common...Rural living is the ONLY way to live IMO...Wouldn't trade it for, well maybe one place..

This is what makes America great, at least for the moment, to have opinions, beliefs and being able to debate the Issues...Common Sense is of what value to People??? I often wonder of this statement...For me to see AGW, it's kind of obvious to me...But I have taken "a lot" of time to study this issue on both sides! Of course if you have a Scientific Interest it does help to see thru the retoric...Not saying you don't have it, A fact but it's obvious you don't know your Science...But that's OK also....we all have our weaknesses...as I do also....

Denny
08 Feb : 08:43
Well, a pretty good Super Bowl last night...You could tell that the Saints wanted it MORE than the Colts! They do have a good team...The player in that controversal call with the 2 point conversion was from Toledo Ohio...Happy to see another team make the Super Bowl list! This was the "best" scenario's from the regional to the Super Bowl I've seen in my time...All tight scored games! That's the way it should be....

A fact
08 Feb : 08:38
Denny I manage 100 acres of my own property.Yes i do hunt on the landI believe gun control is hitting what you aim at) I eat what I harvest and I believe in keeping my deer and squirrel populations to a level the environment can sustain them.I feed birds and the other wildlife on my property. In my life this place will continue to stay stay as it is wilderness.I have chosen to stay in the city so that my acreage is that much more enjoyable.I do have a small cabin on my property that I can stay in.I hope to put solar panels up this spring because I have no electric ran to my cabin.I also plant a new fruit tree every year, they usually end up with a blite but I will keep trying.Yes Denny I too am an American who just happens to not agree with you on certain issues.Ron I did not respond to you because you will believe what you believe and I will believe what I believe,I can see no more reason in discussing this matter with you.

Denny
08 Feb : 08:25
ron, that's one of my favorite's from Penn & Teller....here it is!

sean
08 Feb : 06:33
i agree

ron
07 Feb : 18:18
The episode also pointed out what happens when you appeal directly to emotion, such as sadness or fear. It also shows me that many people, in spite of their advanced education, do not have even a high schooler's understanding of science. And what is scary is that these people are old enough to vote on matters of science and the environmnent.

ron
07 Feb : 18:17
The h2o bit came from an episode of "Bull*&%$" by Penn and Teller. They went to a "green" fair and had people sign a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide. Every single person signed without questioning or blinking. It made the people "feel good" to do something about the environment. And these weren't "slovenly" construction workers, like myself. These were college-educated people, mostly, and every one thought they were up to speed on environmental "issues."

ron
07 Feb : 18:17
Alright, I will spill the beans about the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide, since A Fact refused to respond to that. I have been dealing with dihydrogen fallout today. Intermittently. It causes to CO2 producers to continue putting out CO2. It also causes other things to put out oxygen. What is dihydrogen monoxide, some may ask? H2O. Water.

SFM, Ok, thanks for answer about the Bluebirds..just was checking on your observation skills...

Denny

SFM, what time is Kick-Off???

SFM
07 Feb : 15:00
Going to a Superbowl party in a little while. Should be a good game but the Saints are going to need a few breaks. Manning is tough. Win or lose Ill still get a bellyfull of good ol South Louisiana food. I might even drink a CARBONATED beverage just for spite. These are definitely bluebirds. Beautiful blue backs and an orangish breast. Weve had blue jays my whole life.

Denny
07 Feb : 14:44
SFM, people do confuse the Eastern Bluebird with BlueJays...Can you post a pic in the Latest Forum Posts of what you've seen??

This is the "first" time I've mentioned this portion of my Life...It's been definitely rewarding....Maybe soon I'll put together an article with my pics of what I have and done......

Satellites first started taking measurements of sea ice in 1979-1980. After 28 years of warming Arctic sea today is where it was when measurements started. Will we see news photos of Polar Bears frozen to the ice?

Where is the media now that the Arctic ice concentration is at the same concentration as when measurements began 28 years ago? How many years of normal ice conditions will it take before they admit the Polar Bear isn't threatened? The coverage of both Arctic and Antarctic ice has been very one sided.

Arctic Ice Concentration for May 1980 and May 2008 (See Important Update below)

From the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado

Note that the total is 10.9 million square kilometers for both years. All the while CO2 levels have gone up.

At the other side of the planet the Antarctic is still experiencing record ice. Since 1980 total ice concentration is up 35% and ice extent is up 21%.

From the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado

Where is the media on this? If the Antarctic ice was down 35% it would be headline news for weeks and Congress would probably have passed the cap and trade legislation. But the popular news media is no where to be found on this. We're not even hearing how happy the Polar Bears are or whether we're getting a good bunch of bear cubs out of it. Could be that good news is never welcome news to the those wishing to use this issue for their own political agenda?

Notes:

Update:
We received the following information from a Research Scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center. It makes sense and we're including here in the interest of accuracy. This only affects the Arctic sea ice numbers:
"I just became aware of your June 13 post on the May Arctic sea ice. Please be aware that you've made an important error in your interpretation of the numbers that invalidates your conclusion. The concentration/area numbers are not consistent over the time period due to differences in satellite coverage.

You should only use sea ice extent for comparison between years because that is consistent over the time period. May 1980 extent was 14.0 million sq km, while May 2008 was only 13.2 million sq km."

Using the Ice extent numbers means that there was a 6% drop in Arctic sea ice since 1980. As this scientist has also pointed out this ice is "new" ice that is likely to melt quicker than in years past. We'll grant them that but a "record" ice loss that only extends back 28 years is no record. They have no historic data prior to that other than sporadic ship measurements, nothing older than 150 years. It is very likely that the Arctic sea ice has completely melted before. Of course Antarctic ice is still experiencing record growth.

Media is now reduced to complaining that this is "new ice," not as good as "old ice."

New ice was created during the most recent year and is very thin and thus more susceptable to melting during the following summer. Multi-year ice is generally much thicker and thus more resistant to melting.

Even is all of the Artic ise were to melt this summer, we would have nearly the same area of ice (+/-) next May because (global warming or not), the Artic will continue to freeze each winter. The problem is that the ice that forms in previously open water areas will be new ice that is very thin and will probably melt before the end of July of the following year.

That is why comparing May ice extent, or any winter month ice extent is misleading. What is telling, is the area of ice that exists at the end of summer. Is the end of summer ice extent increasing or decreasing?

"now that the Arctic ice concentration is at the same thickness as when measurements began 28 years ago" - Actually, when you compare both sea ice thickness maps for the Arctic you can see that there is a lot more thinner ice in 2008 than in 1980, not to mention less sea ice extent overall. Maybe you should reconsider this arguement, as it's not very strong. Especially if you actually look at the National Snow and Ice Data Center website, which states: "Arctic sea ice extent for May stood at 13.18 million square kilometers (5.09 million square miles), which is 0.28 million square kilometers (0.11 million square miles) greater than May 2007, but is still 0.42 million square kilometers (0.16 million square miles) less than the 1979 to 2000 average for the month." You're nitpicking to save your arguement (against loss of Acrtic sea ice) by just comparing one recent month to one in the past. With natural variability your going to get highs and lows.

I find it interesting that after decades of Global warming that the total area did not decrease dramatically. It has been shown often that some areas have lost ice yet others have gained in volume.
It would be interesting to look at the area each year listed. and see if there is a correlation between CO2 and Ice area.
The bottom line The warming of the earth was caused by the sun. Now that it is very quiet where is the temperature going. It is going down. We are looking at some of the passes having snow in our area all summer. Abnormally cool weather. OF course the cold imuse be due to CO2 right. I love all the problems in the world blamed on Global warming. I have a hard time seeing anything but a hoax that CO2 is responsible

That is a vaild theory. if it wasn't misinformed and wrong. WOW! that is so wrong! I want you to google solar cycle, and look it up at any website of your choice. We are in a solar minimum for the past 3 or 4 years now. The solar iridescence has been diminishing for the past decade. If it was really the sun, we should be seeing a drastic cooling.

And if you would have taken your own advice and done a little research, you would know that the 11 year cycle to which you are referring has little to no effect on the Earth's climate.

(amused look) If that isn't the pot calling the kettle black. You also, should follow your advice and read up on the effect of the Solar Cycle.
Check the SOHO satellite site, and look at the sun.. NO SUNSPOTS. And the solar min cycle as supposed to have ended MONTHS ago. But it hasn't. no sunspots = lower magnetic field from the sun. That allows more cosmic rays to hit the earth. Cosmic rays cause cloud formation. Which reflects sunlight away, which reduces global temp.

But Clouds also insulate the planet by keeping surface heat from radiating out into space... The net effect depends on how thick, wide, and at what altitude the clouds are... This is where the game gets interesting... Are they insulating or reflecting heat?

This new system will allow the government to take an even higher percentage of my income and spend it on MORE GOVERNEMNT. Institutions like the United Nations is also an important part of our new society. Someone needs to take the money from the productive people of this world and give it to non-productive liberals!

So you are in favor of directing resources away from some areas to other uses in the name of stopping assumed global warming made by man, even if it means that those most at risk will be hit the hardest? For example CORN!!!! you would rather see it diverted from food to be made into ethanol causing food prices sky rocket and causeing the poor of the world to fight that much harder to feed themselves and their families for something that might have no effect on global warming.

You'll never get them to admit the data is skewed, wrong, insufficient, and incorrect.

It lacks... a lot.

Fact of the matter is... in 5 =/- billion years nothing you say or do right now or the next 100 to 500 years will make a flipping difference. The planet will be a cold hard rock unless some celestial event takes place to obliterate the planet or we find some new improved way to blow it up. All the nukes in the world now or that have ever existed combined could not obliterate the planet. Kill everything on it... maybe.. but the rock would still be here.

Deal with that.

Look, no one in the slums of Brazil or the deserts of Sudan give a flip about global warming. They don't have that luxury. If you try to push policies that damage economies or that diminish the standard of living for people, they will lose their concern and your movement will die. People will simply lose the luxury of caring. You can rage all you want about not having the luxury to NOT care, but community interest only trump personal interest when personal interest is mostly sated.
It doesn't help matters that global warming predictions are failing to meet reality or that the advocates resort to fixing data or to using movie footage to pad a documentary. As the lies come out they will eclipse any glimmer of truth that may be nested amidst them.
The fact of the matter is that the ice is more than they predicted it would be. It may be thin now but what about next year or ten yrs from now? Why on earth would anyone heed the alarms of people who said it wouldn't be there at all? Why would anyone believe someone who says that the sun's activity has no impact on our climate? That is so ridiculous that it defies any explanation beyond mindless zealotry.
As food and fuel prices rise, people will be looking for ways to not be alarmed. They will want to justify thinking a bit more selfishly. And the global warming advocates' lack of honesty and aggressive attempts to silence the skeptics will be viewed very cynically. If you people had a good argument, you killed it yourselves. Good Job.

OK Frank, I went to the link. Your point would be?..... That the polar bears don't have enough ice to hunt from?..... That the pretty pink is better than the pretty blue?....

Just exactly how much sea ice is enough?....

I have an idea! Why can't we jump on the global bandwagon and do an ice based cap and trade scheme? You know we'll get the UN to buy ice credits from the penguins and sell them to the polar bears! After all, Frank, according to YOUR link the South pole has way more ice now than it did in 1980. Every good democratic, environmentalist, tree hugger knows that cap and trade will equalize everyones "carbon footprint". Why not ice too?

First of all, you should get your science straight. The statement:
"Where is the media now that the Arctic ice concentration is at the same thickness as when measurements began 28 years ago?"
is ridiculous. The maps are showing concentration, but where do you get thickness out of concentration. These are 2 completely separate things. May 2008 might have seen some growth compared to the last several May's but it is much thinner, first year ice since Sept 2007 was a record low sea ice extent. This 1st year ice has replaced multi-year ice that used to be there, and will melt out much quicker. We are already seeing substantial decreases in the extent now, and this September might come very close to, if not break last year's extreme minimum that caught everyone off guard. May is not a very good month to do comparisons, as it is right when the summer melt season is starting, so any growth during the winter, even if it is thin ice will be seen as extent. Try looking at September ice each year to see the real story of Arctic ice decline.
As for Antarctica, it is being controlled more by a climatic circulation pattern right now than any warming, so that is why there is more sea ice. Winds are favorable for growth there now.

Um, since when does a one year fluctuation in Arctic sea ice mean much when we're talking about underlying climate trends over years, decades, and centuries? Even just last year, the minimum summer coverage was at a record low, and the newly formed ice from this year's cool winter (probably contributed to by the now waning la nina) was actually quite thin. And what about the ice sheets on land? At one point Antarctica was gaining some now pack (related to moisture availability there) but at last report both it and Greenland were still losing mass, along with most other glaciers on the planet.

Its usually quite impossible to agrue with believers in man-made global warming. Its a religion and one of the definitions of a religion is belief without proof. You believe so bad it has to be true. Actually, even if the ice is melting has nothing to do with proof that its the cause of man. Warming believers have taken the agruement to the place that if they can prove or at least show the earth is warming then it has to therefore be man's fault.

It really galls me that some people actually have the audacity to think that "man", has the power to affect global climate change. Man does not have the power to destroy the planet, only himself. I have read that the earth REGULARLY changes its poles, that the evidence of a still molten cored planet whose crust is a mere 35 miles thick, is continually striving to meet a stable and spherical shape. This means that the earth has become egg-shaped and now is beginning to collapse and bulge out in a different area. This causes the earth to shift on its axis, causes tectonic plate shift which accounts for earthquakes, and changes in the temperature of the oceans and even the coriolis effect. Look at how a globule of water in a vacuum reacts!! Evidence I have read indicates that this phenomenon occurs approximately every 10-15,000 years. I'm QUITE positive that the earth will be here long after we have all become vague memories!!!

Anonymous, its possible in the summer there will be no ice in the Arctic but what does this prove. At one time the wind blew much of the ice elsewhere and there is growing proof of a volcano under the arctic. Besides Antartica has been getting cooler and growing overall for over 30 years. But even this isn't proof of man-made global warming. When you realize CO2 effect on warming is logrithmic its affect is less and less. Also CO2 has been much higher in the past and always trails temperature increases and not leading them as the Goracle would have us beleive. As for your claim that no credible institution is taking our stand, what about the 32,000 scientists that signed the Oregon Petition?

I find it very shortsighted of the posters here who say that the ice is thinner, so size doesn't matter. As anyone knows, the ice should get smaller AND thinner at the same time! Take a look at an ice cube taken from your freezer and watch it. If the ice cap at the Arctic has gotten thinner, it must have also gotten smaller! Yes/No?

There is an error in the interpretation of this data for the Arctic. Look at the region around the North Pole. There is a circular area in dark gray. This is a region where the satellite sensor doesn't collect data. Note the size of the circular area is much larger in the 1980 image than in the 2008 image. These circular areas are not included in the "total area" values. That is why 1980 looks to be the same as 2008. In reality, there was much more ice in May 1980 than this past May.

It doesn't matter about global warming. the world is overpopulated! We need to reduce the total population withourt a major war or genocide. It
is simple math, too many people for the limited resources that we have. Cut back on the people and you cut back on pollution, global warming, and the oil shortages and food shortages will go away. But of course there is global warmlng, at least there is in NC where I live and where I grew up. I remember the frozen creeks and rivers, the hard winters. We seldom get snow now in this part of NC. So let the global experts lie all they want to, the truth is right before your own eyes. Just look back in history for about the last fifty years and you will see it revealed. The Great Time Hawk In The Sky does not lie! Have as nice day guys.

The undersea volcanoes under the Arctic (and the rest of the world)have more to do with the global warming than man will ever have.

I don't buy the "scientist" line that the volcanoes under the Arctic have not increased the waters temp and acidity. At 2,100 degrees F, major eruptions under the Arctic Sea...spewing up and covering vast areas of the sea bed...it had some effect on the water and the overhead ice. These happened in 1999 and possibly later, with the added oozing of lava ....it ain't manmade.

Until Gore, the UN, liberal Dems, environmentalists, and everyone else who has a monentary gain to garner from this backs out....facts are given, no money is made off of changes to our economy...the global warming (conviently changed to Climate Change now that the Earth is cooling) is nothing more than a money making scheme.

There is a 50-kilometer piece of ice that came of in AUGUST. By the way, the most affected is Antarctic, not the Arctic.... For now.

Even with the suns solar cycle the fact of which that the antarctic is expanding in size as an object shows that there is still a freezing anommally as compared to just green house gases. If you look at water temps in that area if you go down 2000 ft the water is still freezing all round.

will it cool down if we all use our ice makers, and throw the ice in the ocean?

Do you know what the biggest greenhouse gas is? Not CO2 but H2O. That's right, water vapor. But no one wants to admit that. That would mean global warming is out of our control. Besides, even if it were in our control... we're still part of nature, so it's natural. and the glaciers were receding, but actually, a few have come back. It's their natural cycle to recede when they hit water, and after a few years, say any where from fifty to a couple thousand, they come back. It's like sticking a toe in a cold pool. If at first you don't succeed... the diffrence being it's alot harder for them to succeed
