NASA - The Sun Now

The graph above shows the global temperature anomaly since 1979 (blue) and CO2 levels (fuchsia). There is no correlation between CO2 levels and temperatures. There are very strong historic correlations between solar activity and temperatures. Right now our sun is experiencing very mild solar activity, so expect cooler temperatures! The sun image shows current sun spot activity, it is a near real time NASA image (SOHO MDI Latest Image). Click here for an enlarged view from NASA.GOV.

Quote to Consider
"Excessive intervention in economic activity and blind faith in the state's omnipotence is another possible mistake... Instead of streamlining market mechanisms, some are tempted to expand state economic intervention to the greatest possible extent...
In the 20th century, the Soviet Union made the state's role absolute. In the long run, this made the Soviet economy totally uncompetitive. This lesson cost us dearly. I am sure nobody wants to see it repeated...There is no reason to believe that we can achieve better results by shifting responsibility onto the state...
And one more point: anti-crisis measures should not escalate into financial populism and a refusal to implement responsible macroeconomic policies. The unjustified swelling of the budgetary deficit and the accumulation of public debts are just as destructive as adventurous stock-jobbing."

You don't suppose Washington's weather has anything to do with geography and the trade winds, right?
ron
09 Feb : 05:19

Seattle, I did it for you. The high temp yesterday, 2-8-10, was officially 43 F. As opposed to your stated 105 F. So, why did you lie? In fact, the extended forecast is for 40s and 50s.
ron
09 Feb : 05:11
Seattle, why don't you link in a weather report that showed that it was 105 F? That would be real world data. Not of the power of CO2 but real data, nevertheless.
ron

A Fact, I've tried to discuss with you, as well. Just remember it is you that is terminating the discussion. By the way, I think it's great to put solar on your getaway property. Solar in limited uses will be great. And you must be well off enough to like socialism. I have just the one house that I own and I have to scrape pennies to pay the taxes.

Seattle Q,Meanwhile Washington is about to experience the most snowfall since 1898. The southeast is getting the heaviest snows in the last 15 years.
You walk around in a t-shirt when it's 52 outside. Okay, you must be a moron who doesn't know how to dress themself.
Yes, man made global warming is a hoax. CO2 doesn't have any actual science behind it. Michael Mann is a moron who doesn't understand that tree rings indicate moisture level not temperature.
seattle question
08 Feb : 23:59
the seattle area just had the warmest january is recorded history. i haven't seen a single snow flake all year and yesterday i was walking around outside in a t-shirt. also last year we had one of the hottest summers in recent history here. in a place where 90 is considered too hot to do anything, it was 105. can any of you inbred, right wing, tea baggers tell me global warming isn't real now?

Anonymous, I don't believe that scientists are the enemy. But that means that I don't consider Michael Mann worthy of the term scientist. The East Anglia staff are in the same boat. Their e-mail admissions of their behavior disqualify them from that title no matter how many degrees they have earned.

It's just one of the Alarmist's excuse to cut this site down...Typical Alarmist!!!How about getting to your fiasco that you believe in....Where's the Empirical Evidence that CO2 is casuing AGW??? This is the "point" to this matter...We know here that Temperature has gone up SLOWLY....That's not our issue...Our issue is what we here are complaining about....

a fact said,"I have chosen to stay in the city so that my acreage is that much more enjoyable."
So the less you're on your land the more you enjoy it??
Do the squirrels have the ability to form the concept of
enjoyable? The only way I could enjoy 100 acres would be to live on it and, I'll use
the evil word exploit, but if you hunt and feed the animal population you are in fact exploiting it's resources.

To A Fact. I am also a hunter. It just seems that your definition of "managing" is to kill a few deer and squirrels. I just wonder how your 100 acres was able to survive for the millions of years before you bought it. I mean without those birdfeeders and whatever other food you provide for animals how could they have possibly have survived all this time. If you truly want it to remain wilderness, you dont introduce artificial food supplies, cabins, and solar panels. Look if you like killing animals and eating them, fine. But dont try to feed us some holier than thou, "I am the Lord of the wilderness" BS. Can you tell me EXACTLY how many deer and squirrels live on your 100 acres. If you cant , how do you know how many to kill, you know just to help them out. Looks like you apply the same theories to AGW as you do "wilderness"

A fact...I thought you weren't coming back! Anyway, I'm happy to see that there is SOMETHING in common...Rural living is the ONLY way to live IMO...Wouldn't trade it for, well maybe one place..This is what makes America great, at least for the moment, to have opinions, beliefs and being able to debate the Issues...Common Sense is of what value to People??? I often wonder of this statement...For me to see AGW, it's kind of obvious to me...But I have taken "a lot" of time to study this issue on both sides! Of course if you have a Scientific Interest it does help to see thru the retoric...Not saying you don't have it, A fact but it's obvious you don't know your Science...But that's OK also....we all have our weaknesses...as I do also....

They do have a good team...The player in that controversal call with the 2 point conversion was from Toledo Ohio...Happy to see another team make the Super Bowl list! The episode also pointed out what happens when you appeal directly to emotion, such as sadness or fear. It also shows me that many people, in spite of their advanced education, do not have even a high schooler's understanding of science. And what is scary is that these people are old enough to vote on matters of science and the environmnent.

The h2o bit came from an episode of "Bull*&%$" by Penn and Teller. They went to a "green" fair and had people sign a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide. Every single person signed without questioning or blinking. It made the people "feel good" to do something about the environment. And these weren't "slovenly" construction workers, like myself. These were college-educated people, mostly, and every one thought they were up to speed on environmental "issues."View all posts (10487)

Antarctic Sea Ice Up Over 43% Since 1980, Where Is The Media?
Sea ice at Antarctica is up over 43% since 1980 and we hear nothing in the news, yet Arctic ice is down less than 7% and they're all over it! We've been waiting for the main stream media to pick up on the increase of Antarctic ice but so far they're been totally absent. Guess its doesn't fit the plan.

From the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado
Still no sign of the national media on the extraordinary growth of sea ice at the antarctic. They sure haven't missed a chance to point out the relatively small loss of ice at the arctic. Did did it ever occur to them that perhaps there is a natural process at work that has shifted ice growth from one pole to the other? Do they not want to admit that there are things man doesn't yet understand about how this planet works?
Remember that some of the “models” predicted increased antarctic ice, but they predicted increased “interior ice” due to increased snow fall. None of the models predicted increased sea ice around the antarctic. Yet that is what we have, and not just a little increase but a 43% increase since 1980!. This is highly significant yet hardly anyone in the main stream media (MSM) is talking about it.
Sea ice is much different than interior ice. Some of the models predicted increased ice over the interior of antarctic. If you've ever lived in the extreme cold temperature regions you already understand this. When it gets very cold the air become drier and it snows less, as the temperature warms towards freezing it actually snows more. Since the antarctic rarely even gets close to freezing its understandable that warming would cause more snow fall. Over time compacted snow would lead to more ice. But that is not what is happening here. We're seeing a dramatic increase in “sea ice”, this ice is over the ocean. Sea ice is caused by colder temperatures, not by increased snow fall. An increase of 43% is highly significant, but we hear nothing from either the MSM or the scientific community. Especially compared to the out 6%-7% decrease at the arctic (this isn't year over year, this is a 6% decline since 1980!).
Antarctic Sea Ice for March
Interior ice is also increasing but not due to warming as the models have predicted. According to NOAA GISS data winter temperatures in the antarctic have actually fallen by 1°F since 1957, with the coldest year being 2004. All the while global CO2 levels have gone up and the main stream media has been reporting near catastrophic warming conditions. They regularly show Antarctic sea ice shelves breaking apart, which is an entirely normal process (though they never tell you that part). The main stream media and certain segments of the scientific community truly must have no shame.
If you have doubts about the increase in ice you can run the numbers yourself at the National Snow and Ice Data Center's website (part of the University of Colorado and funded by the National Science Foundation).
And if you want to read something really amusing take a gander at Michael Asher Blog about climate modelers trying to explain antarctic warming.... agh .. cooling....agh... warming it's delightful.

If I get my Earth History right, UH, this has been going on for what, Millions of years. Yet Alarmists think that a .5 degree Celceius per what 100 years caused this!!! Reply to this | Flanagan, nothing was "carefully selected". The month of March was selected because that was the most current month of available data. Comparing the month of March 2009 to the month of March 1980 seems perfectly legitimate to me! The chart you linked to shows the anomaly. Exactly what period did they use to decide what is "normal". It also shows the yearly average. You're comparing apples to oranges and it comes up smelling like a worm. If anyone is manipulating things its you manipulating this discussion. For the month of March 2009 had 43% more ice extent (and 45% ice concentration) than 1980. And it isn't just March, this site has been running this data for several months now and its showing a clear trend of a massive increase in antarctic sea ice. | Guest Reply to this | Dannes, is it me or you have problems with reading basic information. The graph says "March anomalies", so it's about March exactly. If you take 1980 and 2009 as the only two points (for "some" reason) then you get the numbers mentioned in the post. But this is not how a trend is done of course. Comparing two points makes no sense as long as climate is concerned. For example, if I "decide" to compare 1982 and 2007, I can get a declining trend. (see the link) The long term trend is what counts, and obvious : 4.7%. That's it. I'm not diverting the subject at all : the topic is here "how much has been the trend" The answer is 4.7% Any other manipulation of the data is an inslut to the scientific method. |

| Guest Reply to this | Global warming is a joke. The entirety of the issue is fallacious by very nature. Causality is what everyone should pay attention too. If something changes, and something else does afterwards, that DOES NOT mean that the first caused the second. That's just a basic tenet of science. If I put my pants on backwards today and then I end up getting in a car wreck, does it mean my pants influenced my bad luck? Of course not. A shift in CO2 and a shift in climate are just as related. But far be it from the liberals to admit that they don't know everything about how the planet works. They're too busy worshipping a charismatic hollow suit. |

| Guest Reply to this | Note that the sea ice in the Antarctic is on average 1-2m thick and in the Arctic it is 3-4m thick, so the data is noisier (and less significant in terms of ice volume) for the Antarctic. If you have a very noisy data set and pick just two points, you can find data to support any conclusion you want! You need to average many data points before you can spot a trend. If you do a confidence test on the entire data set, you will find no statistically significant trend in the Antarctic data, and a declining trend in the Arctic data. Arctic vs Antarctic. |

So if you believe in good morals, good ethics, and peace then you should absolutely believe in God! It's the same with this argument...first of all, the fact that there IS an argument is reason enough to continue research before building policy around a belief system. And I'm sure very few have a problem accepting that over time all forms of pollution are detrimental over time and we should do our part to make sure that the planet we leave our children is worth living in. But these are not good arguments for the existence of man-made climate change and belief in one shouldn't mean you have to subscribe to another. If this is a scientific matter, why should we take it on faith? |

| Guest Reply to this | Okay people, does it really matter if Global Warming exists at all or not? The point is about making our society more earth friendly. The earth is what keeps us alive and we should not be polluting it with our smog and carbon dioxide. We must do all we can to help our friend "the earth" and that is what it is all about. Even if Global Warming is a big hoax, i do not see a difference between this and telling people that eating a diet high in fat and sugar can cause a heart attack. It is not proven that eating such things will CAUSE a heart attack, however, there is a strong correlation. Although it may not be proven, it keeps people eating healthy foods and that is important. Who cares why they do it, as long as they do. As long as people do everything they can to help this earth, who cares why they are doing it? I bought a Brita pitcher and recycle the filters, instead of buying bottled water, and I also bought all new appliances for my home that use less energy. I drive a hybrid and am considering solar panels for my home. I do all of these things not necessarily because of Global Warming, but because I fell it is my duty to do everything in my power to help this beautiful earth that gives me life. Yes, it did take the threat of Global Warming to realize that my selfish actions could have consequences and, since it helps me to do the best I can for the planet, and since it makes other people in this world do the best for the planet, I am glad that this "hoax" exists, if that is what you would like to call it. |

Study science (chemistry and physics for instance) and understand what is going on with global warming. Or, maybe I just don't know how to read. |

I wonder, is this implies that wealthy republicans are to blame for the current economical crisis, but that is besides the point. Anyway, the liberals that you would like to see bankrup are more likely to support tax money going to scientific research; therefore, determining more facts that you can use to win over debates. Also, this research can continue disproving global warming . As technology advances it becomes easier and easier to prove to the public how wrong scientists have been. CO2 is after all a very difficult molecule to undertand (not really lol!) . Maybe with the new research you can also prove that evolution is also a myth, that the polar bears are actually multiplying like bunnies, that the current rates of plant and animal extinctions are not real, that overfishing is not anthropogenic, and that deforestation for building roads is not caused by humans. | Guest Reply to this | Reading all the above I am remined of the three blind men and the elephant (various versions but to keep it short...) While walking they bumped into an elephant. The first reached out and grabbing the tail said this it was a huge vine, the second reached out and grabbing the leg said it was a tree, the third reaching out grabbed the trunk and said it was a snake. In all science, you will find the one fact that will prove what ever point you want. The wise person will look at all the facts, find the common ground, define cause and effect and then form a conclusion rather than start with a conclusion and work backwards. Doing this, the fact of global warning can't be ignored, even with SHORT TERM trends to the contrary. CO2 is a green house gas, the more the warmer the climate, CO2 in the air now is higher than for thousands of years (check out any college meteorology text book, if not the internet). The CO2 we are burning now in the form of oil, gas, coal is carbon formed from the plants millions of years ago. It took millions of years to lock that CO2 made by plants in those states (oil, gas, coal) and now we are releasing it into the air in a period of a 100 years or so. That may be an equilibrium for the earth (geologic time measured in millions of years) but for humans and our civilization where time is measured in generations (50-100 years) that is NOT a stable situation. Antarctic may be expanding now but what about the rest of the word. Where here is there mention of the North Pole ice melting, and almost every (if not every) glacial system receding at unprecedented levels, (the Andes, Himalayas, Greenand). Where here is there mention of the sea level rise in the Polynesian islands? Where here is there mention of the permafrost melting under Alaskan towns? Where is there mention here that botanists are documenting a shift of plant growth to higher, previously colder, elevations? Could it be that Antarctica, the coldest place on the planet, is reaping the benefit of warming everywhere else? Could it be that warmer air is holding more moister and when it reaches the cold place on the planet, the Antarctic, drops that moisture in the form of snow, allowing the Antarctic to grow? There are other cycles, precession, sun spots, the non circular orbit of the earth. Although these may be relevant for climate changes in distant geologic time, they do not explain the rapid changes observed in the last 50-100 years. Mind like parachute... |

| Guest Reply to this | More... The article's original author says: "If you have doubts about the increase in ice you can run the numbers yourself at the National Snow and Ice Data Center's website (part of the University of Colorado and funded by the National Science Foundation)." The link is a classic example of choosing the data to support the hypothesis. Any user, however, can change the display parameters from "Southern" to "Northern" and will find data supporting the LOSS of ice. Play with the site, compare years, compare winter and summer to different decades. NORTHERN data support global warming persectivee. But again, to look at only this data in exclusion of all others, is no argument for any perpsective. And if you're wondering if more CO2 and global warming is a good thing, email someone living near a coast or in the arctic. I myself would prefer to live a few hundred miles off shore, less likely to have flood or drought. |

| Guest Reply to this | I don't know anything about the antartic ice cap, but I know that for the last 5 years my hometown of Paducah, KY. has had the worst winters with the most snow ever on record! I have a very hard time buying into this global warming fabrication. Also if you happen to break one of those curly light bulbs, you will release mercury into the environment and must, by law, contact the EPA and they will advise you on the eight steps that you must take to minimize the spread of the mercury. Funny how these are only made out of the contry?? Just another bembocratic hoax to save the environment IMHO. |

When the actual vote was exposed less then 5% of those attending had agreed. It seems to me that scientists go to these conferences but pay no attention to the media out put. |

| Guest Reply to this | This article has an interesting idea. I've gone to the site noted, and changed the years around in order to see the data output for myself. The output table can be modified in order to show more than one data point, so I've plugged in a different year in all 32 of the possible different rows showing March. After examing the data for the month of March for the last 31 years (no data in 1978) one trend that I notice is that extent has exceeded the median for the year in all but 4 of those year's data collection for March. A median isn't an average, it's the center point for all of the data. March is the end of summer in Antartica, warmer month right? Some months in each of those years had less ice, some had more ice. The OBVIOUS fact is in the SINGLE month of March in 1980 there was LESS ice than there was in March of 2009. It's been nearly 30 years, our planet has become more industrialized, more pollution, more cutting down trees, etc, etc... You'd think from a logical viewpoint there would be LESS ice in March of 2009 than in March of 1980. Global warming is controversial and fake. It's easy to argue about made-up things, let's argue about the actual color of grass being blue not green, I've seen blue-grass before!!! Or the color of the sky being purple, not blue, since I've seen purple skies before. It's all about how the data is presented. |

| Guest Reply to this | Wow, i think that the temperature of earth may be increasing, but i don't believe that we have a lot to do with it. People should not be taxed on carbon. Do they even know what the main components of our atmoshpere are? However, i believe that we need to take care of this beautiful planet that God created. If that means driving hybrids, using solar panels and planting trees, let's do so. It is our duty to try to keep the beauty of this world intact. What right do we have to destroy it> |

I think the data shows increase only in the Ross Sea, but this is still legitimate. The more BS science we run into this, the less likely we are to be take seriously. let the data show what is really going on here - otherwise we are the same as the cap and trade people. |

| Guest Reply to this | Funny or not! In the early 70's there was a concern about returning to the ice age. Then, as now, extremist are trying to capture their 15 minutes of fame. Why is this? Is it a diversion to more important problems or issues? Before you jump fully into something you must study those attempting to convince you of something and also their habits. People that truly believe what they say will change thier habits to conform to those beliefs. Now have you seen those changes in the leaders of the global warming scare. A word to the wise may be. What is being sold and what is being bought. Money is in there somewhere!!!!!!!!! |

| Guest Reply to this | Not sure what the point of this article is, or what it intends to improve -- that there's no such thing as global warming?! So there's a difference in Antarctic sea ice between 1980 and 2009 -- it's just one data comparison. Other date comparisons show much smaller differences in Antarctic ice extents. Still average Antarctic temperatures have risen slightly over the last 30 years. And there are more dramatic declines in ARCTIC sea ice, as well as higher increases of average temperature in the Arctic. Not to mention many other considerations such as worldwide deglaciation, increased Greenland surface ice melting, thawing tundra regions, and so on. Looking at the bigger picture, there is actual and predicted sea level rise, increased atmospheric moisture, etc. Also, the dramatic CO2 rise (indisputably anthropogenic in its source) contributes to ocean acidification, which in turn threatens coral reefs. There are many facts to consider as other commentors have pointed out. Be objective, be intellectually honest, look at all the facts, and don't succumb to political posturing. IT's ABOUT THE SCIENCE. |

| Guest Reply to this | (nb. In the lighthearted spirit of honest dialogue...) Now what are you saying? That these effects are not happening? The cherry-picking of a single data comparison is completely inconclusive to the determination of global warming (intellectually honest people call the political motive a "red herring." The conclusion you draw is based on a "false equivalency" due to the limited explanatory value of the Antarctic data compared to data all over the world -- eg, it ignores the substantial warming in the Arctic. I agree the so-called climateGate emails are disturbing and the players involved deserve our censure. But a global conspiracy of 1000s of scientists?? The best response to this is that at the end of the day it's the SCIENCE will win out. I'm betting on the scientific method. BTW, the statement about US temperatures is a fabrication (http://climateprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/ncdc-temp.gif). (And please don't end a sentence with a preposition These global changes are not due to .5 degrees (that's just in the Antarctic), but 3-4F in the Arctic regions, 1.2F overall to date. The fact is they many warming effects are happening and have been measured as listed above, not to mention ... "lake and river ice is melting earlier in the spring and forming later in the fall. Plants are blooming earlier in the spring. Mountain glaciers are melting. Coastal temperatures are rising. And a multitude of species of birds, fish, mammals, insects and plants are extending their ranges northward and, in mountainous areas, upward as well." -NOAA -cm |

| Guest Reply to this | Ok so statistics can be manipulated but so any information out there today. Here are the facts I see. A. One point we see melting and loss in the ice meaning for "some" reason its warmer. B. One point we see freezing and a growth in ice, meaning in this area its WARMER? NO meaning its colder. Thus is why you hear now "climate change" Because no one not even the scientists can come together to state things are warming or cooling. If Global warming was true then that means its global people.. Apparently its not global or we would see a loss at both points. There are many factors that cause this planet to become cool or to heat up.. To state that a rise in c02 is the total cause of the warming trend in the north would be incorrect. So many factors are involved to narrow it down to this is extreme, does that mean I as a conservative believe we should continue to pollute? No, I want fresh water for the future people on this planet.. Does this mean I want to see scare tactics used to bring fear into people into the same belief? NO.. This I would call terrorism.. We should be concerned for our planet and do what we can to cut down pollution as a whole, not due to climate change because as humans we cannot control what this earth will do with us. We have an affect I am sure but to the extent some are saying would be incorrect if you look at numbers from multiple sources. Jet fuel... Just this right here, when it burns it produces 50% Co2 and 50%moisture.. Scientists do agree on one thing.. Moisture in the air holds in heat, the amout of jet fuel being burned daily on this planet puts more moisture into the air in one day than we have put Co2 in our existance... This is one of the variables that is taken into consideration when scientists are calculating along with hundreds of others... So to try and pin point one aspect of what we do to this planet as the problem is crazy.. We pump billions of gallons of oil out of the ground.. Could this possibly be a problem? Possibly taking out some insulation that protects us from the heat of the earths core? I mean this garbage could go on forever.. Bottom line is, do what you can for the enviornment. Shut of your lights, recycle, walk or ride a bike if possible. To devistate economy's of the world over something that has yet to have any real proof or concensus is just wrong and is a control tactic. Those with thier hands out expecting something for nothing, expecting someone else to take care of them look to the powers at be to do so.. One problem, eventually the money runs out and then who is going to take care of you? Someone has to work.. People are not free thinkers anymore, they are in school when they watch the news rather than taking real facts and forming an opinion.. BIG picture people.. Man has wanted what since the beginning.. POWER, CONTROL.. If you look at what is going on in the world and how things repeat themselves you will see what is really going on.. USA in the 30's same thing was happening as is now, yet there are some differences. 7% of the population that could work accepted public assistnace. Now 39% of the population that can work but doesnt accepts public assistance. We have more than doubled our numbers as humans.. This math is bad.. poor people are people that are controlled. Do you want your children to have ambition and work for something or do you want them to sit and wait for someone else to take care of them? Before the US became a free country to explore and create this world was stuck behind a horse and a cart.. In just 200 years look where the world is, that is because of free thinking, the given ability to advance.. There is no reason it should not have happend 500 years ago, nothing was different, still the same cart and horse, still the same people.. what was the difference? Peoples right to free think, create, advance.. Yet that gives people power, dictators/kings want to control not give power.. We need to continue to advance. In the future if this garbage does not turn around I will be able to say " I told ya so, you wanted it and now you got it" to those with thier hands out.. Power/control.. fear tactics/terrorism... Two economic groups, rich/poor.. My income was considered upper middle class 10 years ago and now it is considered working class poor and I could go on public assistance.. Wake up... Cap in trade does nothing for the economy, we can be green because its good for the earth.. not due to scare tactics.. I want a hybrid, 25k for a hybrid.. hmm my income does not support it.. If it was so important why so costly? Who stands to loose if we become greener... Smoke screens make you dumb and distract you from the truths. GL everyone |
