Solar Activity, the cause of all global warming.

The graph above shows the global temperature anomaly since 1979 (blue) and CO2 levels (fuchsia). There is no correlation between CO2 levels and temperatures. There are very strong historic correlations between solar activity and temperatures. Right now our sun is experiencing very mild solar activity, so expect cooler temperatures! The sun image shows current sun spot activity, it is a near real time NASA image (SOHO MDI Latest Image). Click here for an enlarged view from NASA.GOV.

Quote to Consider
"The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.

Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific technological elite."

08 Feb : 18:36

And by the way, I don't consider soft core porn author and Chairman of the IPCC, R.K. Pachauri, to be a scientist either. He is, at most, a minor league political hack.

congahands
08 Feb : 16:30
Anonymous, I don't believe that scientists are the enemy. But that means that I don't consider Michael Mann worthy of the term scientist. The East Anglia staff are in the same boat. Their e-mail admissions of their behavior disqualify them from that title no matter how many degrees they have earned.

Denny
08 Feb : 14:58
Anonymous, did you see my link??? Oh yes, decades of Bogus research that uses "scare tactic's...Now that's real Science..I think you should read this instead...but of course you probably won't.....

That is if you really care about the ClimateGate scenerio....

Denny
08 Feb : 14:50
Anonymous, blogs ARE a source of communication for article's "containing" Science information! You know that! It's just one of the Alarmist's excuse to cut this site down...Typical Alarmist!!!

How about getting to your fiasco that you believe in....Where's the Empirical Evidence that CO2 is casuing AGW??? This is the "point" to this matter...We know here that Temperature has gone up SLOWLY....That's not our issue...Our issue is what we here are complaining about....

Denny
08 Feb : 14:47
Anonymous, that depends on your stance! And NO we don't depend on Blogs but we do have these.......

Anonymous
08 Feb : 14:41
so, you guys continue to rely on blogs and political commentaries as the basis for your science.

when will you actually look at the decades of scientific research.

or are scientists still the enemy when discussing matters of science?

Denny
08 Feb : 14:14
I recommend going there and posting your comments on that site in the below article! Let them know how you feel!!! I just did!

Denny
08 Feb : 14:07
Gee, Obama starting up a "new" agency dedicated to addressing the impending doom of Global Warming....Where in the H@#* did he find monies for that!!!

stop smoking pot
08 Feb : 12:35
a fact said,
"I have chosen to stay in the city so that my acreage is that much more enjoyable."

So the less you're on your land the more you enjoy it??

Do the squirrels have the ability to form the concept of
enjoyable? The only way I could enjoy 100 acres would be to live on it and, I'll use
the evil word exploit, but if you hunt and feed the animal population you are in fact exploiting it's resources.

SFM
08 Feb : 12:02
To A Fact. I am also a hunter. It just seems that your definition of "managing" is to kill a few deer and squirrels. I just wonder how your 100 acres was able to survive for the millions of years before you bought it. I mean without those birdfeeders and whatever other food you provide for animals how could they have possibly have survived all this time. If you truly want it to remain wilderness, you dont introduce artificial food supplies, cabins, and solar panels. Look if you like killing animals and eating them, fine. But dont try to feed us some holier than thou, "I am the Lord of the wilderness" BS. Can you tell me EXACTLY how many deer and squirrels live on your 100 acres. If you cant , how do you know how many to kill, you know just to help them out. Looks like you apply the same theories to AGW as you do "wilderness"

Denny
08 Feb : 08:50
A fact...I thought you weren't coming back! Anyway, I'm happy to see that there is SOMETHING in common...Rural living is the ONLY way to live IMO...Wouldn't trade it for, well maybe one place..

This is what makes America great, at least for the moment, to have opinions, beliefs and being able to debate the Issues...Common Sense is of what value to People??? I often wonder of this statement...For me to see AGW, it's kind of obvious to me...But I have taken "a lot" of time to study this issue on both sides! Of course if you have a Scientific Interest it does help to see thru the retoric...Not saying you don't have it, A fact but it's obvious you don't know your Science...But that's OK also....we all have our weaknesses...as I do also....

Denny
08 Feb : 08:43
Well, a pretty good Super Bowl last night...You could tell that the Saints wanted it MORE than the Colts! They do have a good team...The player in that controversal call with the 2 point conversion was from Toledo Ohio...Happy to see another team make the Super Bowl list! This was the "best" scenario's from the regional to the Super Bowl I've seen in my time...All tight scored games! That's the way it should be....

A fact
08 Feb : 08:38
Denny I manage 100 acres of my own property.Yes i do hunt on the landI believe gun control is hitting what you aim at) I eat what I harvest and I believe in keeping my deer and squirrel populations to a level the environment can sustain them.I feed birds and the other wildlife on my property. In my life this place will continue to stay stay as it is wilderness.I have chosen to stay in the city so that my acreage is that much more enjoyable.I do have a small cabin on my property that I can stay in.I hope to put solar panels up this spring because I have no electric ran to my cabin.I also plant a new fruit tree every year, they usually end up with a blite but I will keep trying.Yes Denny I too am an American who just happens to not agree with you on certain issues.Ron I did not respond to you because you will believe what you believe and I will believe what I believe,I can see no more reason in discussing this matter with you.

Denny
08 Feb : 08:25
ron, that's one of my favorite's from Penn & Teller....here it is!

sean
08 Feb : 06:33
i agree

ron
07 Feb : 18:18
The episode also pointed out what happens when you appeal directly to emotion, such as sadness or fear. It also shows me that many people, in spite of their advanced education, do not have even a high schooler's understanding of science. And what is scary is that these people are old enough to vote on matters of science and the environmnent.

ron
07 Feb : 18:17
The h2o bit came from an episode of "Bull*&%$" by Penn and Teller. They went to a "green" fair and had people sign a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide. Every single person signed without questioning or blinking. It made the people "feel good" to do something about the environment. And these weren't "slovenly" construction workers, like myself. These were college-educated people, mostly, and every one thought they were up to speed on environmental "issues."

ron
07 Feb : 18:17
Alright, I will spill the beans about the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide, since A Fact refused to respond to that. I have been dealing with dihydrogen fallout today. Intermittently. It causes to CO2 producers to continue putting out CO2. It also causes other things to put out oxygen. What is dihydrogen monoxide, some may ask? H2O. Water.

Denny

SFM, Ok, thanks for answer about the Bluebirds..just was checking on your observation skills...

Denny

SFM, what time is Kick-Off???

SFM
07 Feb : 15:00
Going to a Superbowl party in a little while. Should be a good game but the Saints are going to need a few breaks. Manning is tough. Win or lose Ill still get a bellyfull of good ol South Louisiana food. I might even drink a CARBONATED beverage just for spite. These are definitely bluebirds. Beautiful blue backs and an orangish breast. Weve had blue jays my whole life.

Denny
07 Feb : 14:48

Denny
07 Feb : 14:44
SFM, people do confuse the Eastern Bluebird with BlueJays...Can you post a pic in the Latest Forum Posts of what you've seen??

This is the "first" time I've mentioned this portion of my Life...It's been definitely rewarding....Maybe soon I'll put together an article with my pics of what I have and done......

Sea ice at Antarctica is up over 43% since 1980 and we hear nothing in the news, yet Arctic ice is down less than 7% and they're all over it! We've been waiting for the main stream media to pick up on the increase of Antarctic ice but so far they're been totally absent. Guess its doesn't fit the plan.

From the National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado

Still no sign of the national media on the extraordinary growth of sea ice at the antarctic. They sure haven't missed a chance to point out the relatively small loss of ice at the arctic. Did did it ever occur to them that perhaps there is a natural process at work that has shifted ice growth from one pole to the other? Do they not want to admit that there are things man doesn't yet understand about how this planet works?

Remember that some of the “models” predicted increased antarctic ice, but they predicted increased “interior ice” due to increased snow fall. None of the models predicted increased sea ice around the antarctic. Yet that is what we have, and not just a little increase but a 43% increase since 1980!. This is highly significant yet hardly anyone in the main stream media (MSM) is talking about it.

Sea ice is much different than interior ice. Some of the models predicted increased ice over the interior of antarctic. If you've ever lived in the extreme cold temperature regions you already understand this. When it gets very cold the air become drier and it snows less, as the temperature warms towards freezing it actually snows more. Since the antarctic rarely even gets close to freezing its understandable that warming would cause more snow fall. Over time compacted snow would lead to more ice. But that is not what is happening here. We're seeing a dramatic increase in “sea ice”, this ice is over the ocean. Sea ice is caused by colder temperatures, not by increased snow fall. An increase of 43% is highly significant, but we hear nothing from either the MSM or the scientific community. Especially compared to the out 6%-7% decrease at the arctic (this isn't year over year, this is a 6% decline since 1980!).

Antarctic Sea Ice for March
              Extent Concentration
2009 5.0 million sq km 2.9 million sq km
1997 3.8 million sq km 2.2 million sq km
1980 3.5 million sq km 2.0 million sq km
This is an increase of 45% for ice concentration since 1980. This continues a long trend that has been noted here for several months..

Interior ice is also increasing but not due to warming as the models have predicted. According to NOAA GISS data winter temperatures in the antarctic have actually fallen by 1°F since 1957, with the coldest year being 2004. All the while global CO2 levels have gone up and the main stream media has been reporting near catastrophic warming conditions. They regularly show Antarctic sea ice shelves breaking apart, which is an entirely normal process (though they never tell you that part). The main stream media and certain segments of the scientific community truly must have no shame.

If you have doubts about the increase in ice you can run the numbers yourself at the National Snow and Ice Data Center's website (part of the University of Colorado and funded by the National Science Foundation).

And if you want to read something really amusing take a gander at Michael Asher Blog about climate modelers trying to explain antarctic warming.... agh .. cooling....agh... warming it's delightful.

No, because they are picking this up over at Fox News!

Massive Ice Shelf about to Break away from Antarctic Coast by AP.

Gee, I thought this is how Glaciers are made after the snow builds up and turns into Ice and then pushes it out over the Continent and into the Sea. If I get my Earth History right, UH, this has been going on for what, Millions of years. Yet Alarmists think that a .5 degree Celceius per what 100 years caused this!!!

I haven't seen much ado about the latest Ice growth reports out there in the Internet! Obama is taking all the Glory right now, Admin..

"from 1979 to 2007, Antarctic sea ice underwent a slight increase. The Antarctic ice extent increases were smaller in magnitude than the Arctic increases, and some regions of the Antarctic experienced strong declining trends in sea ice extent. See the Arctic Sea Ice FAQ for more information. Image provided by National Snow and Ice Data Center, University of Colorado, Boulder."

The link in the article above is from NSIDC. It shows from 1980 to 2009 an increase of over 43% in antarctic sea ice. Are they calling this "a slight increase". I would call that highly significant.

Here is the REAL NSIDC trend

rate is (4.7 +- 4.4) % - in other words, 10 times less than what is proclaimed here. UNLESS one carefully selects some of the points to make people think otherwise.

Flanagan, nothing was "carefully selected". The month of March was selected because that was the most current month of available data. Comparing the month of March 2009 to the month of March 1980 seems perfectly legitimate to me!

The chart you linked to shows the anomaly. Exactly what period did they use to decide what is "normal". It also shows the yearly average. You're comparing apples to oranges and it comes up smelling like a worm.

If anyone is manipulating things its you manipulating this discussion. For the month of March 2009 had 43% more ice extent (and 45% ice concentration) than 1980. And it isn't just March, this site has been running this data for several months now and its showing a clear trend of a massive increase in antarctic sea ice.

Stop diverting the subject every time someone brings up a point.

Dannes,

is it me or you have problems with reading basic information. The graph says "March anomalies", so it's about March exactly. If you take 1980 and 2009 as the only two points (for "some" reason) then you get the numbers mentioned in the post.

But this is not how a trend is done of course. Comparing two points makes no sense as long as climate is concerned. For example, if I "decide" to compare 1982 and 2007, I can get a declining trend. (see the link) The long term trend is what counts, and obvious : 4.7%.

That's it. I'm not diverting the subject at all : the topic is here "how much has been the trend" The answer is 4.7% Any other manipulation of the data is an inslut to the scientific method.

Agreed. This site should focus on the fact that there is more ice, not cherry pick points to exaggerate a point.. the very same tactic you're supposed to be opposing.

If you compare the month of September between 2008 and 1980 you get the opposite results. It appears the increase in March results is due to thinner ice that is more spread out as a result of melting.

So just more cherry picking of data to keep the flat-earthers heads in the sand.

Hardly equal at all. Your example shows 3% more ice in 1980, the article shows 43% more ice. Your thinner ice theory doesn't work either as the ice concentration was up 45%.

Come on you can do better than that! How about blaming it on cow farts drifting down from Argentina. Or huge American conglomerates holding boondoggles in Buenos Aires for over paid CEOs. Ok, I know lets blame it on the ozone hole, we haven't heard from that lately. Oh yea, those would make less ice. Ummmm, geez maybe there isn't warming at the antarctic after all.

Oh wait I've got it! Its the icy cold hearted bureaucracy of socialism creeping back in to the civilized world.

it would appear that the earth has NATURAL warming and cooling in order to keep itself, and not to mention, every living species on it, alive. If you compare every graph, then you could would see that the tempurature goes up and down. and no matter what the human race does about it, our intentions are worthless compared to the natural ways of the earth.

one more thing, the whole idea of carbon dioxide causing global warming, and killing the life in earth is ridiculous. carbon dioxide IS what plants breath, then they create oxygen for us.

simple is right. If you are eliminating the trees that turn CO2 into O2, than you are eliminating the planets ability to produce O2. In turn, decaying trees release carbon back into the atmosphere. This would be a two fold problem with a synergistic effect. Not unlike Ice deflecting heat, melting, causing the water to absorb heat.

Guys, have you been sleeping in class?

Trees make oxygen? Ouch.

A chemical reaction using sunlight is producing it.

Now the big question for you would be: What are trees doing at night? Leading to: What do trees do, when they finally drop dead and decompose?

But let me help you by saying that much; without the existence of oxygen there wouldn't be any trees.
Simple biology.

So, now go looking for the source of that strange stuff that doesn't exactly come from the trees or other green plants for that matter...

Read the unedited political history people. The Club of Rome said back in the 80s/90s that they had 'hit upon the idea of global warming to unite the people' behind their agenda (ie. one world government/one world bank/carbon tax credits). Wake up! The enviromental movement has been hijacked and used and abused for years by the power elite in their pursuit of a world wide collectivism. Global warming (or climate change as it has morphed into) is nothing more than the latest faith based religion!

Global Warming Hoax or not . . . . I think the part of the message coming from the Crips (Libs) . . is not all that bad. What's wrong with a little conservation. Someone had mentioned the "Swirly Light" . . . Absolutely nothing wring with conserving some energy. Taxing conservation . . now that sucks. Don't beat up efforts of people who really want to make a difference in the planets energy consumption, because of some silly "Bloods vs. Crips" Political gang mentality.

I say taxing any type of effort sucks . . . .

Bashing anybody who says "Hey maybe we should't use as much electricity or oil or coal to benefit the earth . . . That sucks too.

There is a simple fact. Our Earth's resources are finite. Stuff will eventually run out. Do we wait for that to happen . . . or do we start making efforts today. Wow I totally sound like a commercial. Maybe I'm brain washed . . .

Or maybe I am actually using my brain and not taking sides with the Gang mentality.

I conserve electricity because it saves me on my electrical bill, I conserve on fuel because it saves me money on my fuel bill, not because of some silly notion that the insignificant human being is causing this planet to heat up like an oven and cause all the ice in the world to melt. If you think humans have such a grand effect on this planet then you are arrogant in that respect. I agree we should conserve some energy and that's what I do, but not for global warming.

Seriously, make up your minds and stick with it. BTW I just watched a very large thunderstorm split in two and circumvent the city where I live. Its called urban blight. Humans caused it. I also live in Texas (Bush Country) where its been +100 and the hottest summer ever in history. Unfortunately, thermodynamics is thermodynamics, and there is no free lunch. How much energy does it take to produce a swirly bulb compared to a typical wire-incandescent, per bulb? I am curious to see the critical thinking.

In response to the original article, I believe this is an interpretation of another article in which a case is made for 43% increase. Looking at primary source information, a slightly less than 5% accrual trend is noted, in terms of area.

If the poster whom has the argument that the ice is thinner etc, one must consider then two feedback loops and determine which may be stronger - The reflection of insolation by a larger area of thinner ice vs. the propensity to melt of thinner ice by subsurface water flow. I suggest that only one of these quantities changes the DelE, the net system (Earth) flux of energy from the source (Sun.) If one considers the spread of ice lowers the DelE of the net system, then less thermal energy overall is available to do work. Less thermal energy means less ice means more decrease in DelE as a trend. This feedback mechanism should be examined more closely by the reader.

Global warming is a joke. The entirety of the issue is fallacious by very nature. Causality is what everyone should pay attention too. If something changes, and something else does afterwards, that DOES NOT mean that the first caused the second.

That's just a basic tenet of science.

If I put my pants on backwards today and then I end up getting in a car wreck, does it mean my pants influenced my bad luck? Of course not. A shift in CO2 and a shift in climate are just as related.

But far be it from the liberals to admit that they don't know everything about how the planet works. They're too busy worshipping a charismatic hollow suit.

Note that the sea ice in the Antarctic is on average 1-2m thick and in the Arctic it is 3-4m thick, so the data is noisier (and less significant in terms of ice volume) for the Antarctic. If you have a very noisy data set and pick just two points, you can find data to support any conclusion you want! You need to average many data points before you can spot a trend. If you do a confidence test on the entire data set, you will find no statistically significant trend in the Antarctic data, and a declining trend in the Arctic data.

Arctic vs Antarctic.

The link you posted exposes this site as being intellectually lazy and deceptive. It shows again how important it is to
- Try to study a topic thoroughly before jumping to conclusions spoonfed by others
- Verify sources to expose quoting out of context

I quote:
"Both Arctic and Antarctic sea ice extent are characterized by fairly large variations from year to year. The monthly average extent can vary by as much as 1 million square kilometers (386,102 square miles) from the year-to-year monthly average. The area covered by Antarctic sea ice has shown a small (not statistically significant) increasing trend.

According to scientific measurements, both the thickness and extent of summer sea ice in the Arctic have shown a dramatic decline over the past thirty years. This is consisistent with observations of a warming Arctic. This trend is a major sign of climate change in the polar regions and may be an indicator of the effects of global warming"

Had this site been scientific as well as political in nature, this quote would have been included. Perhaps the author needs to focus more on what seems to be his expertise: blaming everything on socialism, labeling fascistic countries as socialist, spreading disinformation about socialism, even labeling global warming a socialist propaganda tool. Typical ignorant Hegelian ranting.

The link in the article was 100% accurate. Antarctic sea ice is up 43% since 1980. Concentration being up 46% would tend to indicate the ice probably isn't as thin as you claim (where's the data on antarctic sea ice thickness?). You may quibble over the fact that this may be an anamoloy, but the fact is antarctic sea ice has a far greater extent and concentration than it did 30 years ago when satellite monitoring began. The only mention of the arctic was to point out that its only down 7% yet the media give it major air time, while making no mention of the enormous increase in antarctic sea ice.

If you want to argue that the ice varies so much from year to year than I would point out that 30 years would not be nearly long enough to spot any true trends. Anytime you have this much variability you need a much longer period of time to make any conclusions. You can't have it both ways. Either the 43% increase is significant, or the fact that its an anamoloy means we can discern no meaningful trend over such a short period of time. If the later is true than you wacky alarmists should just shutup and go away.

Heh. Yes it was. It worked in my browser. No difference of opinion there.

"Antarctic sea ice is up 43% since 1980."
No it's not. You pick two data points (two months in two years decennia apart) in a highly fluctuating graph, one low and one high, compute the difference and then create the impression that this represents a long term trend. However:

"The monthly average extent can vary by as much as 1 million square kilometers (386,102 square miles) from the year-to-year monthly average."

You were supposed to look at the slope of the fluctuating graph, not compare march 1980 with march 2009!

Such comparisons are bogus! How can it be that I only have to visit the source you quote, read their footnotes and explanations and look at the numbers to realize this? Did you rush this article? If there is any remaining doubt wether or not your article is misleading, consider the following quote:

"Arctic ice has been decreasing at an average rate of about 3 percent per decade, while Antarctic ice has increased by about 0.8 percent per decade."
--

Nothing in the above quote is left to the imagination. Now, how many decades since 1972? For convenience: let's predict the 4 decade situation (2012). There is an increase of Antarctic ice of 4 * 0.8 = 3.2% However, there is a decrease of Arctic ice of 4 * 3 = 12%. Taken together, there is a decrease of polar ice of 8.8%

You see, they don't just compare march 1980 with march 2009, they compare differences in year-by-year averages. The difference between two random data points is completely irrelevant.

Then, you end with this:
"You can't have it both ways. Either the 43% increase is significant, or the fact that its an anamoloy means we can discern no meaningful trend over such a short period of time. If the later is true than you wacky alarmists should just shutup and go away."

Either we are wrong or you are right? What kind of a choice is that? How about: you lost this round, try again the next?

What's wrong with believing in a Christian God? Good morals, good ethics, peaceful. So if you believe in good morals, good ethics, and peace then you should absolutely believe in God!

It's the same with this argument...first of all, the fact that there IS an argument is reason enough to continue research before building policy around a belief system. And I'm sure very few have a problem accepting that over time all forms of pollution are detrimental over time and we should do our part to make sure that the planet we leave our children is worth living in. But these are not good arguments for the existence of man-made climate change and belief in one shouldn't mean you have to subscribe to another.

If this is a scientific matter, why should we take it on faith?

Okay people, does it really matter if Global Warming exists at all or not? The point is about making our society more earth friendly. The earth is what keeps us alive and we should not be polluting it with our smog and carbon dioxide. We must do all we can to help our friend "the earth" and that is what it is all about. Even if Global Warming is a big hoax, i do not see a difference between this and telling people that eating a diet high in fat and sugar can cause a heart attack. It is not proven that eating such things will CAUSE a heart attack, however, there is a strong correlation. Although it may not be proven, it keeps people eating healthy foods and that is important. Who cares why they do it, as long as they do. As long as people do everything they can to help this earth, who cares why they are doing it? I bought a Brita pitcher and recycle the filters, instead of buying bottled water, and I also bought all new appliances for my home that use less energy. I drive a hybrid and am considering solar panels for my home. I do all of these things not necessarily because of Global Warming, but because I fell it is my duty to do everything in my power to help this beautiful earth that gives me life. Yes, it did take the threat of Global Warming to realize that my selfish actions could have consequences and, since it helps me to do the best I can for the planet, and since it makes other people in this world do the best for the planet, I am glad that this "hoax" exists, if that is what you would like to call it.

Whats is wrong with tap water. how much energy goes into making the Brita filter/pitchers and even the bottled water? Even the other stuff you have changed, how much has it cost the environment to make, as opposed to keeping what you have. who is laughing, you or the manufacturers and governments collecting taxes.

Because CO2 isn't a pollutant! It is necessary for plant life to exist. It is easy to prove that the atmosphere is at one of the lowest concentrations of CO2 in Earth's history, plants are essentially CO2 starved. Any geologist could tell you that life THRIVED under times of higher CO2. If you love the planet why would want to cut back on CO2?

Yes, plants use CO2 in the process of photosynthesis. If you're going to look back at deep time and compare the Earth when it was COVERED with plants and not roads, buildings, homes and farmland, then yes, I would agree that several million years ago, excess CO2 was kept in check by the millions of plants that covered the planet.
Where have you been? We continue to REMOVE plants/trees at an alarming rate - have you heard of deforestation??? Loss of rainforest in South America? This has been going on for 20 years or so. Hmmmm....yes, plants love CO2 and rely on it for their biological processes. I'm just curious as to what will happen if we continue to remove plants from our environments and replace them with heat reflecting structures. Why don't you find a website/data link that supports your theory that plants love CO2 and will thrive in a high CO2 environment? When you can show that we have the SAME quantity of plants on Earth as we did millions of years ago (before concrete) and that the Earth is thriving in a high CO2 environment today, let me know.

In terms of your claim that sea ice is increasing in the Antarctic - can you say "pot - kettle - black" - you are blasting scientists for manipulating data - yet you've done the same. You have taken TWO data points. I could look at my bank account from 10 years ago right after pay day and then my current bank account now on the same date - and say "Wow, I'm making less money than 10 years ago! How did that happen?" Or, I could compare my account at the END of the month 10 years ago, and the same time/month now and say "Holy cow, my salary has quadrupled!" Yes - there are other variables in there - such as when my paycheck arrives each month and what I'm doing with my money. Two data points is NEVER a sufficient measure to draw conclusions in science. Oh wait - you are not a scientist. THAT explains a lot!

Why don't you actually READ the IPCC report. I'm sure there are some big words in there - but the data there doesn't lie. Yes, I'll agree that statistically, you can often make numbers do what you want. But I've seen the graphs - the only statistics applied is a best fit line (as someone posted on this site).

I won't comment again - not really worth my time. Good luck with your quest to disprove this. Maybe I'll come back in 20 years and see if you're still around....

Im so sick of this Hoax libral money grabbing vote getting issue. It is a true hoax. How about stopping all those Icebreaking expidition ships that study this hoax that break up that ice every day. No, lets focus on taxing us to death and putting mure regulations on America while China focuses on creating jobs, buying and using oil and coal and kicking our ecomnys ass... Yes, that's a good idea.

However, I have a better one. Study science (chemistry and physics for instance) and understand what is going on with global warming. By the way, I went to web site recommended here (National Snow and Ice Data Center's web) and the core of the study (Arctic sea ice younger, thinner as melt season begins) supports the existence of global warming. Or, maybe I just don't know how to read.

"Facts will always kill the Libs in any debate, but the drive-bys keep the Libs on the front page. Bankruptcy of some of these slugs doesn't seem such a bad idea."

I wonder, is this implies that wealthy republicans are to blame for the current economical crisis, but that is besides the point.

Anyway, the liberals that you would like to see bankrup are more likely to support tax money going to scientific research; therefore, determining more facts that you can use to win over debates.

Also, this research can continue disproving global warming . As technology advances it becomes easier and easier to prove to the public how wrong scientists have been. CO2 is after all a very difficult molecule to undertand (not really lol!) . Maybe with the new research you can also prove that evolution is also a myth, that the polar bears are actually multiplying like bunnies, that the current rates of plant and animal extinctions are not real, that overfishing is not anthropogenic, and that deforestation for building roads is not caused by humans.

You let the world know the truth!

This is funny, if you click on this link it shows a graph taken from the same article that is supposed to disprove global warming. The graph shows the March anomaly between 2005 to 2008, but an overall decline in artic ice from 1978 to 2008.

LOL

The article clearly shows a pattern in support of overall heat increase! If you want to dissprove global warming you should use one of the articles writen by one of the sicentists that received money from Exxon Mobil. Or at least be more obscure in how you manipulate scientific articles.

Sorry I do not believe this graph is correct. It shows ice lower in March 09 than March 79. As for an anomaly? it clearly shows the is trend going up the past 5 years. Will the real statisticians stand up? Give me the data, as long is it is not manipulated. I have no agenda.

Reading all the above I am remined of the three blind men and the elephant (various versions but to keep it short...) While walking they bumped into an elephant. The first reached out and grabbing the tail said this it was a huge vine, the second reached out and grabbing the leg said it was a tree, the third reaching out grabbed the trunk and said it was a snake.

In all science, you will find the one fact that will prove what ever point you want. The wise person will look at all the facts, find the common ground, define cause and effect and then form a conclusion rather than start with a conclusion and work backwards. Doing this, the fact of global warning can't be ignored, even with SHORT TERM trends to the contrary. CO2 is a green house gas, the more the warmer the climate, CO2 in the air now is higher than for thousands of years (check out any college meteorology text book, if not the internet).
The CO2 we are burning now in the form of oil, gas, coal is carbon formed from the plants millions of years ago. It took millions of years to lock that CO2 made by plants in those states (oil, gas, coal) and now we are releasing it into the air in a period of a 100 years or so. That may be an equilibrium for the earth (geologic time measured in millions of years) but for humans and our civilization where time is measured in generations (50-100 years) that is NOT a stable situation.

Antarctic may be expanding now but what about the rest of the word. Where here is there mention of the North Pole ice melting, and almost every (if not every) glacial system receding at unprecedented levels, (the Andes, Himalayas, Greenand). Where here is there mention of the sea level rise in the Polynesian islands? Where here is there mention of the permafrost melting under Alaskan towns? Where is there mention here that botanists are documenting a shift of plant growth to higher, previously colder, elevations?

Could it be that Antarctica, the coldest place on the planet, is reaping the benefit of warming everywhere else? Could it be that warmer air is holding more moister and when it reaches the cold place on the planet, the Antarctic, drops that moisture in the form of snow, allowing the Antarctic to grow?

There are other cycles, precession, sun spots, the non circular orbit of the earth. Although these may be relevant for climate changes in distant geologic time, they do not explain the rapid changes observed in the last 50-100 years.

Mind like parachute...

Just Me, I'd advise you to continue studying the science involved. While CO2 may be making a small contribution to the recent ESTIMATED global temperature increases(which peaked in 1998) there really is not scientific basis for saying that humans made more than a small, marginal increase in global temperatures. Even the majority of the IPCC scientists involved in the publications did not endorse a conclusion that the temperature increase was man made. The Anthropogenic Global Warming conclusion was the result of a small number(60 or so out of some 2000 scientists) politicians involved in vetting their own studies, writing the Policy summaries, and the Lame Media that took the one or two sentence media summaries and ran with them. The folks(I can't call them scientists) who did this form a small, insular group of like-minded individuals who have a strong personal interest in promoting global warming as a political issue.

The article's original author says:

"If you have doubts about the increase in ice you can run the numbers yourself at the National Snow and Ice Data Center's website (part of the University of Colorado and funded by the National Science Foundation)."

The link is a classic example of choosing the data to support the hypothesis. Any user, however, can change the display parameters from "Southern" to "Northern" and will find data supporting the LOSS of ice. Play with the site, compare years, compare winter and summer to different decades. NORTHERN data support global warming persectivee. But again, to look at only this data in exclusion of all others, is no argument for any perpsective.

And if you're wondering if more CO2 and global warming is a good thing, email someone living near a coast or in the arctic. I myself would prefer to live a few hundred miles off shore, less likely to have flood or drought.

Take the raw data, relabel it time and x. Take the data set to anybody qualified and ask what can be validly said about change in x over time. The answer is not 43% increase.

I don't know anything about the antartic ice cap, but I know that for the last 5 years my hometown of Paducah, KY. has had the worst winters with the most snow ever on record! I have a very hard time buying into this global warming fabrication. Also if you happen to break one of those curly light bulbs, you will release mercury into the environment and must, by law, contact the EPA and they will advise you on the eight steps that you must take to minimize the spread of the mercury. Funny how these are only made out of the contry?? Just another bembocratic hoax to save the environment IMHO.

This whole global warming thing became for me a hoax after the supposed meeting of 2600 scientists an a UN sponsored conference and they announced the majority of them agreed that global warming was man made. When the actual vote was exposed less then 5% of those attending had agreed. It seems to me that scientists go to these conferences but pay no attention to the media out put.

This article has an interesting idea. I've gone to the site noted, and changed the years around in order to see the data output for myself. The output table can be modified in order to show more than one data point, so I've plugged in a different year in all 32 of the possible different rows showing March. After examing the data for the month of March for the last 31 years (no data in 1978) one trend that I notice is that extent has exceeded the median for the year in all but 4 of those year's data collection for March. A median isn't an average, it's the center point for all of the data. March is the end of summer in Antartica, warmer month right? Some months in each of those years had less ice, some had more ice. The OBVIOUS fact is in the SINGLE month of March in 1980 there was LESS ice than there was in March of 2009. It's been nearly 30 years, our planet has become more industrialized, more pollution, more cutting down trees, etc, etc... You'd think from a logical viewpoint there would be LESS ice in March of 2009 than in March of 1980. Global warming is controversial and fake. It's easy to argue about made-up things, let's argue about the actual color of grass being blue not green, I've seen blue-grass before!!! Or the color of the sky being purple, not blue, since I've seen purple skies before. It's all about how the data is presented.

Funny or not!
In the early 70's there was a concern about returning to the ice age.
Then, as now, extremist are trying to capture their 15 minutes of fame.
Why is this?
Is it a diversion to more important problems or issues?
Before you jump fully into something you must study those attempting to convince you of something and also their habits.
People that truly believe what they say will change thier habits to conform to those beliefs.
Now have you seen those changes in the leaders of the global warming scare.
A word to the wise may be. What is being sold and what is being bought.

Not sure what the point of this article is, or what it intends to improve -- that there's no such thing as global warming?!

So there's a difference in Antarctic sea ice between 1980 and 2009 -- it's just one data comparison. Other date comparisons show much smaller differences in Antarctic ice extents. Still average Antarctic temperatures have risen slightly over the last 30 years.

And there are more dramatic declines in ARCTIC sea ice, as well as higher increases of average temperature in the Arctic. Not to mention many other considerations such as worldwide deglaciation, increased Greenland surface ice melting, thawing tundra regions, and so on.

Looking at the bigger picture, there is actual and predicted sea level rise, increased atmospheric moisture, etc. Also, the dramatic CO2 rise (indisputably anthropogenic in its source) contributes to ocean acidification, which in turn threatens coral reefs.

There are many facts to consider as other commentors have pointed out. Be objective, be intellectually honest, look at all the facts, and don't succumb to political posturing. IT's ABOUT THE SCIENCE.

You honestly believe that .5 degrees could cause all of those things to happen? While at the same time Antarctic ice expands? While temperatures in the U.S. have been going down for 10 years now? Get real, at some point you have to read the ClimateGate emails and face the fact that you've been lied to all these years, literally made a fool of.

(nb. In the lighthearted spirit of honest dialogue...)

Now what are you saying? That these effects are not happening?

The cherry-picking of a single data comparison is completely inconclusive to the determination of global warming (intellectually honest people call the political motive a "red herring." The conclusion you draw is based on a "false equivalency" due to the limited explanatory value of the Antarctic data compared to data all over the world -- eg, it ignores the substantial warming in the Arctic.

I agree the so-called climateGate emails are disturbing and the players involved deserve our censure. But a global conspiracy of 1000s of scientists?? The best response to this is that at the end of the day it's the SCIENCE will win out. I'm betting on the scientific method.

BTW, the statement about US temperatures is a fabrication (http://climateprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/ncdc-temp.gif).

(And please don't end a sentence with a preposition

These global changes are not due to .5 degrees (that's just in the Antarctic), but 3-4F in the Arctic regions, 1.2F overall to date.

The fact is they many warming effects are happening and have been measured as listed above, not to mention ... "lake and river ice is melting earlier in the spring and forming later in the fall. Plants are blooming earlier in the spring. Mountain glaciers are melting. Coastal temperatures are rising. And a multitude of species of birds, fish, mammals, insects and plants are extending their ranges northward and, in mountainous areas, upward as well." -NOAA

Ok so statistics can be manipulated but so any information out there today. Here are the facts I see.

A. One point we see melting and loss in the ice meaning for "some" reason its warmer.

B. One point we see freezing and a growth in ice, meaning in this area its WARMER? NO meaning its colder.

Thus is why you hear now "climate change" Because no one not even the scientists can come together to state things are warming or cooling. If Global warming was true then that means its global people.. Apparently its not global or we would see a loss at both points.

There are many factors that cause this planet to become cool or to heat up.. To state that a rise in c02 is the total cause of the warming trend in the north would be incorrect. So many factors are involved to narrow it down to this is extreme, does that mean I as a conservative believe we should continue to pollute? No, I want fresh water for the future people on this planet.. Does this mean I want to see scare tactics used to bring fear into people into the same belief? NO.. This I would call terrorism..

We should be concerned for our planet and do what we can to cut down pollution as a whole, not due to climate change because as humans we cannot control what this earth will do with us. We have an affect I am sure but to the extent some are saying would be incorrect if you look at numbers from multiple sources.

Jet fuel... Just this right here, when it burns it produces 50% Co2 and 50%moisture.. Scientists do agree on one thing.. Moisture in the air holds in heat, the amout of jet fuel being burned daily on this planet puts more moisture into the air in one day than we have put Co2 in our existance... This is one of the variables that is taken into consideration when scientists are calculating along with hundreds of others... So to try and pin point one aspect of what we do to this planet as the problem is crazy.. We pump billions of gallons of oil out of the ground.. Could this possibly be a problem? Possibly taking out some insulation that protects us from the heat of the earths core? I mean this garbage could go on forever..

Bottom line is, do what you can for the enviornment. Shut of your lights, recycle, walk or ride a bike if possible. To devistate economy's of the world over something that has yet to have any real proof or concensus is just wrong and is a control tactic.

Those with thier hands out expecting something for nothing, expecting someone else to take care of them look to the powers at be to do so.. One problem, eventually the money runs out and then who is going to take care of you? Someone has to work.. People are not free thinkers anymore, they are in school when they watch the news rather than taking real facts and forming an opinion.. BIG picture people..

Man has wanted what since the beginning.. POWER, CONTROL.. If you look at what is going on in the world and how things repeat themselves you will see what is really going on..

USA in the 30's same thing was happening as is now, yet there are some differences.

7% of the population that could work accepted public assistnace.

Now 39% of the population that can work but doesnt accepts public assistance.

We have more than doubled our numbers as humans.. This math is bad.. poor people are people that are controlled. Do you want your children to have ambition and work for something or do you want them to sit and wait for someone else to take care of them? Before the US became a free country to explore and create this world was stuck behind a horse and a cart.. In just 200 years look where the world is, that is because of free thinking, the given ability to advance.. There is no reason it should not have happend 500 years ago, nothing was different, still the same cart and horse, still the same people.. what was the difference? Peoples right to free think, create, advance.. Yet that gives people power, dictators/kings want to control not give power.. We need to continue to advance.

In the future if this garbage does not turn around I will be able to say " I told ya so, you wanted it and now you got it" to those with thier hands out..

Power/control.. fear tactics/terrorism... Two economic groups, rich/poor.. My income was considered upper middle class 10 years ago and now it is considered working class poor and I could go on public assistance.. Wake up... Cap in trade does nothing for the economy, we can be green because its good for the earth.. not due to scare tactics.. I want a hybrid, 25k for a hybrid.. hmm my income does not support it.. If it was so important why so costly? Who stands to loose if we become greener... Smoke screens make you dumb and distract you from the truths. GL everyone
